Fourth
Trailblazer star Clyde Drexler,
strides into the auditorium and
rp on the the speaker’s platform.
Saturday Drexler welcomed
jver 200 Oregon coaches and
ithletic administrators attending
it one day seminar at Memorial
Coliseum titled, “Athletes vs.
Drugs.”
Clyde begins with a joke to
soften the sharp tragedy he tells,
“Someone once asked me if I us
ed drugs. I said,‘I don’t need to
do drugs. At 6’8” I’m high
enough.”
The audience laughs. Then he
tells what it was like living with a
brother who was an addicted
user. The audience is quiet. Drex
ler speaks in a quiet tone as he
draws a picture of stress and
disruption for the entire family,
“There were always problems.
Then one day, someone came to
the door. They asked if this was
the home of the Drexler family.
They said my brother was dead
from an.overdose.”
It was a somber beginning for
an information packed day. In an
interview later that day, Joe
Steiner, Treatment Director for
Serenity Lane Treatment Center,
said, “Drugs have been a part of
society since the beginning of
time - since man has found a way
to alter his moods. What is hew is
the magnitude of the problem,
and that use has become a
cultural norm.”
Steiner thinks that the
Department of Education has to
begin looking at funding pro
grams for prevention and in
tervention at the elementary
through college level. Some
educators though are looking
differently at the meaning of
drug use. Judy Lovre, Head

Cook to teach
“Series”
The John Inskeep En-
vironmental Learning Center at
Clackamas Community College
is sponsoring a special class
which is part of the
“Owner/Builders Series” by
renowned homesteader, Garry
Cook.
The class will meet on Thurs
day, April 16, .1987 through
May 7 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the
center Pavilion.
blem. Dr. Bob Cook, Team
Physician for the Portland
TrailBlazers responded in a
presentation to Grantham.
Jerry Pflug, Director of
Athletics for the Beaverton
School District said there were a
number of “givens” in looking
at the drug crisis. “Youngsters
have a lot of time on their hands
and the amount of quality time
parents spend with their kids
averages about 12 minutes a
day,”he says. “And if that’s
true, then coaches have an hour
to be aj^ositve role model for
youth.”
Other given factors, Pflug ad
ded were the importance of
positive peer pressure. And the
stress on athletes for excellence,
achievement and proficiency.
| “(very few) go from high
jchool sports through college
sports to the professional circuit
and young people don’t think
about the future, only about
right now,” Pflug said.
Jack
Avina
summed
everything up well when he said,
“We’re concerned about the
whole person in coaching the
athlete. And we’ve got to ad
dress all the issues including
nutrition, health, drugs and sex.
Our goal is to develop good
lifelong habits. Thank God we
can at least talk about it.’
Class fee is $25 and $20 for
ELC members.
