Renegade skate swallows Oregon City See by Dean Grey f ViDTD r Editor It was really more than anyone could take, just being a student and never really having seen any death or destruction. I knew that as a reporter it was my obligation to follow this thing out. But I never thought that I would be in- stramental in the destruction of it. As a matter of fact I never thought that it could be destroyed. However, I cannot take all the credit. If Bret Hodgert hadn’t timed the jump accurately it would have never been destroyed. I suppose I should start at the beginning. That would have been about 5 o’clock in the morning on friday the 28 of March, that’s when I first heard the noise. I remember I was sitting in my office when I heard it. What it was is the biggest’explosion I have ever heard, only only it wasn’t an ex- plosion as I found out later. I jumped out of my chair spilling warm tea in my lap, ran out the door, and into Stan Johnson, who also had a wet spot on his ¡lap. “Scared the piss out of me too,” said Johnson. At first I didn’t understand what he meant but as I recall I now know. Together we raced toward the noise, stopped short of what used to be the Communi- ty Center. What was left would take decades to explain what- I can tell you is that there was nothing left. At this point Johnson left to do what it is that police do in an emergency. I don’t know what that is but I’m sure that it helped. As the dust settled and the smoke cleared I noticed a large shape moving off in the direction of town. I walked over to where Paul Kyllo’s office was and saw left him only this time he was or fear I couldn’t tell. About him standing with two alone.
