Cougars win regional championship

tournament, sparked the
Cougars with 24 points, seven
rebounds, and seven assists.
■ After establishing a 37-22
halftime lead, the Cougars held
on for the win in front of the
1 500 fans at Bellevue Comm-
munity College, where the tour-
narnent was held.
I Shooting played a major role
in the Cougars’ triumph over
the Titans. Clackamas outshot
Tacoma 56 percent to 31 per­
int from the field and 71 per­
riman who contributed seven
points and five assists,
The Titans, who were comp­
teting in their fourteenth tour­
nament, are the winners of the
five regional championships,
their last in 1986.
This year’s was only the se­
cond year the Cougars have
qualified in the regional tourna­
ment. In 1985 they were
defeated in the qualifying
round.
In second round action on
Feb. 27 the Cougars belted the
Cardinals of Skagit Valley
87-78.
was the 46-37 margin in the first
half which set the groundwork
for the Cougars advancement
into the championship game
against Tacoma.
Fouls played a major factor in
the contest. The Cardinals com­
mitted 29 fouls leading to 30
Cougar points, while Clackamas
committed 20 fouls responsible
for 18 points on the Skagit Valley
side of the scoreboard.
Cardinal center Tim Nicholas
scored 16 points to lead Skagit
Valley in that category. Guard
Aaron Hansen poured in 13
points and gave out 12 assists;
Todd Thompson contributed 13
points; and Greg Olsen netted 12
points and grabbed 13 rebounds
for Skagit Valley.
Making their tenth tournament
in 1987, Skagit Valley has one
championship under their belt.
That came in 1985 with a victory
over Grays Harbor.
Newton scored 25 points and
grabbed 10 rebounds, and Newlin
added 19 points to lift the
Cougars over Grays Harbor in a
squeaker 64-63 in the first round
on Feb. 26.
The Cougars were down by
one at halftime, but managed to
outscore the Chokers 34-32 to
post the narrow victory enabling
them to move on to the second
round.
Clackamas shot just seven of
15 and Grays Harbor hit eight of
14 from the free throw line. A
small improvement by the
Chokers could have changed the
outcome of the game, and for
that matter, the tournament.
Forward Rod Wateley led the
Chokers with 20 points while
Aaron Bell and Kelly Bell dished
in 14 points each.
Guard Terry Newton scored
30 points, grabbed 11 rebounds,
and hit two of two shots from
the three point line as the
Cougars ended highline’s
season Feb. 21.
The 86-87 romp was the tenth
consecutive win for the
Cougars, who were in control
for most of the game.
Pete Newlin scored 18 points,
Russell Livingston 15, and Eric
Christen 12 before fouling out
for the Cougars, who held a
49-26 halftime lead. Guard Jeff
Stein dished out a game high,
six assists for Clackamas.
Tom Betti led highline with
19 points. Greg Sparling netted
13 points and captured nine re­
bounds, Milt Grant scored 12
including two three point field
goals, and Brian Burndt manag­
ed 11 points, for the Thunder­
birds.

After being down by 23 at
halftime, highline staged a com­
eback. The Thunderbirds
outscored Clackamas 13-4 to
start off the second half to nar­
row the lead to 14.
The Cougars, led by
Newton’s 11-19 from the field,
came back and held on to seal
the win.
Newton racked up 96 points
through the tournament and was
voted Most Valuable Player.
Stein, who averaged nine point,
was awarded Most Inspirational
Player for the tournament.
Newlin, who was voted to the
tournament all star team, came in
second in scoring for the Cougars
by netting 68 points for a 17 point
average.
In other tournament results,
Saturday Yakima Valley
outscored Skagit Valley 108-105
for third place and Chemaketa
toppled Grays Harbor 84-74 for
fourth place.
Saturday’s championship rout
was the thirteenth straight victory
for the Cougars who mauled, rip­
ped, and more importantly,did
what it took to become tops in
the northwest.
