Sports Swimsuit issue: A tradition for the “macho man” As February rolls around I’m reminded of my girlfriend on Valentine’s Day and my sisters’ birthdays on Feb. 27 and March 4. This means I must spend much of my time during the month searching for three “perfect” gifts. On one such shopping ex travaganza I walked past the beautiful models, this issue is designed to inform the reader of all the new styles of swimwear on the market. Ranging from $36 to $575 in price, many of the suits are revealing but “cover what they need to,” ac cording to Macpherson. It’s hard for me, as a 19 year old male to look at this objec tively, but I am for the annual Curran’s by Christopher Curran Sports Editor L Finn competes on Cougar squat by Heleen Veenstra /(Si Staff Writer magazine section of a store. One magazine jumped out and said, “buy me!” This isn’t the first year that this has happened to me. Once again I was bitten by the Sports Illustrated annual swimsuit issue bug. I know what you’re saying. No, I did not buy the magazine because of any chauvinism. It’s more of a tradition of the males in my family dating back to when Cheryl Tiegs was on the cover. In the past eight years we’ve come a long way, from Tiegs to Christie Brinkley (now Mrs. Bil ly Joel) to Carol Alt (included in this year’s pictorial), European native Paulina Porizkova, who starred in the Cars’ video “Drive”, to this year’s newcomer, Sydney, Australia native, Elie Macpherson, who more than graces the cover and many inside pages. Aside from all of these issue - possibly because I am a 19 year old male, but there is more to this than meets the eye, so to speak. Too many people think that there is something wrong with this “sleazy, chauvinistic” pic torial. I say if the models don’t mind, which seems to be the case, then it’s okay. What is at issue here is the right for women who are against the issue to call men who do like it ‘‘male chauvinists.” There’s no doubt in my mind that if this issue featured Tom Selleck, Mark Harmon, or Rob Lowe in bikini briefs it would be a perfectly legitimate issue. I’m going to leave it up to you now guys. If you want to buy it, don’t be intimidated. But, follow my lead; hide it from your girlfriend. “I started my sophomore year in high school,” said Mitzi Finn, a 6’1” basketball player at Clackamas Community Col lege. Finn said she started to play basketball because “they kind of recruited me out.” She pointed out that because she was about 6 ft. tall at a small high school, coaches asked her to play. Finn went to McKenzie High School in Blue River, Oregon, 40 miles east of Eugene. Finn was voted most outstan ding female athlete and scholar athlete at McKenzie High School. She was also a Tri County First Team All-League player and All-Star selection. “I got a scholarship here,” said Finn. “Garver (Clackamas Coach) came and saw me play.” Which was at the play-offs, Finn pointed out. She said Garver asked her to play for Clackamas and offered her school tuition and a trip to Classifieds Hawaii, so “I said, sure and came.” About Hawaii, Finn said, “It was the life, it was so cool.” She pointed out they played two games, winning one and losing one. She said the rest of the time she layed out on the beach and “checked out the scenery.” Finn stated her best game this year was against Western Oregon State, the Junior Varsi ty team, where she scored 18 points. She said she was sick at this game and at her best two games she wasn’t feeling well. Finn said she isn’t sure about her major, “Something in sciences, but I’m really not sure. I was looking at Oregon State, but I’m not sure really,” she pointed out. About high school basketball Finn expressed, “My senii year in high school we ended i with a 17-5 record.
