■ver have one of those days
■re everything turns out great?
■'he National Football
■gue’s New York Giants had a
Jay like that Sunday when they
■oped over the Denver Bron-
■ 39-20 in Super Bowl XXI.
■he game’s margin of victory
af 19 points were the least
■ount since the Washington
■¡skins stunned the Miami
■phins 27-17 in Super Bowl
■11. The 39 points accumulated
■ the Giants is the second
■lest amount in the history of
■ game. The highest amount
■-the 46 set by the Chicago
■rs last year".
Most valuable player honors
■e awarded to' New York
quarterback Phil Simms, who
completed 22 for 25 passes, 268
■ds, zero interceptions, and
^■e touchdowns. Simms’ com
pletions percentage of 88 percent
his 10 consecutive compole-
tions set new Super Bowl records.
The Broncos struck first with a
record-tying 48 yard field goal
from kicker Rich Karlis, who
would set another record by miss
ing a 23-yarder, the shortest miss
in Super Bowl history.
New York immediately struck
back with a six-yard pass from
Simms to Zeke Mowatt, giving
the Giants a 7-3 lead. With 2:06
left in the first quarter, Denver
took the lead when quarterback
John Elway lunged into the end
zone from four yards away.
With just under three minutes
left in the first half, Elway made
his second appearance in the end
zone. This time he was sacked by
Giant defensive end George Mar-

. Five minutes into the third
quarter New York took the lead
for good when Simms hit Mark
Bavaro on a 13-yard pass, mov
ing ahead by six points, 16-10.
Kicker Roul Allegre extended
that lead to nine by kicking a
21-yard field goal. With less than
30 seconds to go in the third
quarter, runningback Joe Morris
ran one yard for the Giants’ third
touchdown of the game. Morris’
run was set up by Simms’ 44-yard
pass to Phil Mcconkey, ending
the third quarter at 26-10.
The Giants opened up the
fourth quarter with a six-yard
pass from Simms to McConkey
With nine minutes to go in the
game, Karlis kicked a 28-yard

from Elway to Vance Johnson.
A record was set for most points
in one half by two teams with 40
in the second half. The combin
ed 17 points by both teams in
the first quarter tied a record set
by San Francisco and Miami in
Super Bowl XIX. The Giants set
a new record for points in one
half by one team with 30.
“When you think of the
Denver Broncos, you think of
John Elway. When you think of
the Giants you don’t think of
Phil Simms. Well, now maybe
they will,” said Simms after his
performance in Super Bowl
XXI.
“Phil was unbelievable!” ex
claimed head coach Bill
Parcells, who was a victim twice
of linebacker Harry Carson’s
Gatorade bucket shower.
From here, both teams will
start rebuilding, hoping to play
in Super Bowl XXII on Jan. 31,
1988 at Jack Murphy Stadium
in San Diego, California.
All in all from Sunday:
Parcells got his share of
“Gatorade,” Simms got his day
in the sun, and the Giants had
one of the days where
everything turns out great.

Super Bowl Sunday
America’s favorite holiday
by Ted Weiss
Staff Writer
What’s America’s favorite
holiday? Christmas? The
Fourth? No way!
Unofficially, Super Bowl Sun
day is America’s favorite holiday.
On what other day can everyone
become a die-hard football fan
and have a good time without
leaving the armchair?
Football: That highly charged
and violent contact sport we so
thoroughly enjoy on one day of
the year. Helmets crash and
bodies are flung like rag dolls
while we crack open another
Budweiser and maybe belch
violently in either disgust or
delight, depending on which team
you have money invested in.
Yes, Super Bowl Sunday is the
time to eat, drink, and be merry,
as you become the couch potato

you always were.
Isn’t it funny how all the spon
sors pay so much money to
advertise during the game? Get
real guys! Who’s going to run to
the store between plays to buy
some beer when there’s already
an ample supply in the fridge
awaiting consumption (10 pallets,
perhaps?)
What really gets me is that all
the commercials are short, sweet,
and to the point, rather than the
typical commercials that have
evolved into lengthy music
videos.
Super Bowl Sunday is what
every Sunday should be: A time
to relax (HA!) with friends and
family. It is a time to watch big
boys smash little boys and maybe
make a few bucks on the side (I
said maybe!). You might not
want to get as merry every Sun- .
day, but isn’t that the magic of it?
. It’s an excuse to party!! And
you can always catch the
highlights of the game on the
nightly news if you get too load
ed.
