Tiano excels on and off the court
by Mary Prath

Karla Tiano, a guard for the
girls’ basketball team at
Clackamas, started playing when
she was in the fourth grade. All
of her friends were playing and it
kept her busy. “I never was a kid
to just sit around. I liked to stay
active.” said Karla. Her family
had a hoop, so she could pratice
whenever she wanted to.
Karla is taking general studies
this year. “I want
to get the
blocks out of the way” stated
Karla. |As far as what she will be
doing next year, Karla said,
“Next year is still up in the air.”
When choosing a four-year col
lege to transfer to, she prefers
two above the rest, although
money is a problem: “I want to
go Western Oregon State or
Arizona State, but it depends on
the basketball scholarships and
money-l ean get ¡saved up.”
Karla went to Oregon Gty
High Schoolfor four years where
she was involved in basketball
and track. She went to state four
years in a row. She was the first
girl to go to state for Oregon City
High School for the track team.
The events she participated in
were the long jump, the triple
jump and sprint. Karla is not on
ly talented in sports, but is also
intelligent as well. She graduated
with the honor cord and a 3.7
GPA at Oregon City High
School.
i- Karla’s career goals for the
future are to be a coach for kids,
preferrably girls, elementary age.
She would also like to teach, and
be a counselor for children. “I
want to be the type of person that
a kid ten years old can come to
when they have a problem, and
see me as a friend.”
So what Karla would like to do
is go to school for four years,
then hopefully get a student
teacher’s job. “I might teach
awhile then go into counseling.”
said Karla. She is keeping her op
tions open at this point, but with
the talents Karla has, it’s certain
she’ll have no problem getting
what she wants.
