Sports Lady Cougars wiped out in play-offs by 19 By Dave Holmes Editor-In-Chief AUBURN, Wash. - The Battle of the Boards, as well as Saturday night’s play-off basketball game, was won by Green River Community Col- lege’s Lady Gators hands down, with a final score of 76-57. Clackamas coach Phil Garver said, “ We were just not mentally ready to play, and it’s been killing us all year.” Perhaps Garver should have said ‘not ready to play in side.’ Green River coach Mike Willis said before the game that closing down Clackamas’ inside game would be the key for his team to win. While the game started out tenatively for both teams, the Gators took command after a few minutes by forcefully stealing the ball several times and creating a defensive whirl wind. Clackamas didn’t register their first points until four and a half minutes had ticked off the clock. Johnston snatched an offensive rebound and layed the ball in, but such oc currences were few and far between in the first half. At halftime the scoreboard read 32-17 in favor of the Gators, and frustration seem ed to set in to the Cougars, who shot only 30 percent from the floor. But the opening tip of the second half saw a couple of determined Clackamas freshmen, 5-foot-5 guard Paula Barnes and 6-foot for ward Angie Stein, step into the fray Stein took matters into her own hands by driving the lane, drawing a lot of fouls from the smaller Gator defense, and scrapping for every rebound in sight. “ ‘We have to start playing like we want it’ is what (Coach) Graver said at halftime,” said Stein. “We really need someone to take control of the game and I tried to do that.” Even though the_Cougars tact Loretta Carter - 651-3882 after 6:00 p.m. everyday. Nancy Katzer and Maura Doohan, who had 11 assists, put on an outside shooting clinic by regularly hitting 18 to 20-foot jump shots. The Cougar defense would even tually come out to challege the outside shot and open up the lane for generally crisp Gator passes inside. With 7:48 to play in the game, Puanana Lackland fouled out, leaving 5-foot-ll Laura Kishpaugh to play center. From that point, walking on water would have been an easier task than winning the game for the Cougar eagers. At the final buzzer, Green River’s hustle proved out as the teams left the court, leav ing behind a final score of 76-57. Johnston led the Cougars in scoring with a quiet 20 points.
