Lady Cougars
Grapplers win
By Scott Wyland
Staff Writer
Last Thursday’s match with
SWOCC turned out to be
more of a mismatch as the
Cougs literally ‘wiped the mat
up’ with the other team. Near
ly every SWOCC wrestler was
pinned by a Cougar.
It was one of the fastest dual
meets in memory. This was
due to the fact that the average
pin time was two and a half
minutes. The final score was
50-18. Only six of those
points did SWOCC actually
earn.
The one pin that SWOCC
did muster was ironically dur
ing the most exciting confron
tation of the evening. It was in
the 158 lb. class between Larry
Stafford of SWOCC and
Cougar Randy Bradford.
The match was a close,
action-packed one. In the first
round, Bradford took down
Stafford. Stafford escaped
and took down Bradford. It
was up and down all the way
through. The second round
proved disastrous for Brad
ford. Bradford left himself
vulnerable for an instant
allowing Stafford to escape,
take down, and pin him in one
explosive move.
Another surprising win of
the night was Cougar Mark
Hagg over Rick Hawkins of
SWOCC. Hagg, with little
wrestling experience, and none

on the varsity level, pinned his

pushing points ahead of him.
Hagg had wrestled the same
man last week during an ex
hibition match and lost.
A comeback is always
sweet.
The only win for the Cougs
that wasn’t technically a pin
was still counted as six points
anyway. Terry Loper smeared
SWOCC’s Jeff Seanell in a
whopping 15-0 victory.

them on defense, but we
should, we’re the biggest team
in the league,” said Garver.
High scorers of the game
were Patty Mattis with 16,
Puanana Lackland was second
with 15 and Susan Johnston
added 14.
Coach Garver added that
his team looked like a, “whole
different team. We have to
play like that more often. I
have a feeling we’re gonna be
in the league playoffs.”
Later, when asked to
forecast the coming regionals,
optimistic (if not, realistic)
replies came from the Cougar
locker room. Heavyweight
Kris Tellagen commented,
“We have a young team. Only
two guys we had last year ac
tually returned. There’s at
least four or five guys on the
team that have a good chance.
They’re the ones that have
been winning all year. But I’m
not going to say the whole
team couldn’t do it if they
wanted to,. The problem is
getting the whole team to pull
together.”

Garyer also added that the
Cougars played a good inside
game, with Johnston and
Lackland picking up the
passes and putting the ball in.
Garver also added that,
“We’re just going to have to
do that more often.”
Last Wednesday night, the
Cougars battled against Mt.
Hood and lost in a blowout
match, 72-55. Coach Garver
called it, “An ugly game.”
Garver said the team did not
play good basketball, and he
added that, “none of them
were prepared to play.”
