Roundbailers miss chance for second

The Cougar baseball team
lost a double-header 10-9 and
6-4 to Linn Benton Communi
ty College May 14.
In the first game there were
home runs by Dan Eberhardt,
Darrell Pizer and Joe
Johnson. “We were hitting
well and everyone was playing
good defense,” Coach Paul
Roeder said. “We were just
beat in the pitching depart
ment.” Four pitchers were us
ed in the game including Brock
Birch, Rod Jackson, Dan
Eberhardt and Rich Evans.
The team played and split a
double-header with Lane
Community College May 17 in
Eugene. The Cougars lost the
first game 6-7 after a lead of
5-0 up to the fourth inning.
But, Coach Roeder, reported
“the pitching didn’t hold up
and we ended losing the
game.”
In the second game,
however, Clackamas came
back to take control of the
field, winning 4-3. They led in
scoring throughout the game.
Five Clackamas team
members were nominated to
the League’s all-star team in
cluding Brock Birch at pitcher,
Darrel Pizer at outfield, Dan
Eberhardt at first base,
Mickey Eberhardt at outfield
and Craid Norris at third base.
The all-star team final selec
tions have yet to be made.
Coach Roeder said he will
concentrate on recruiting for
the summer team and next
year’s team.The summer team
will consist of players from
this team, recruits for next
year and some ex-Clackamas
players. The games will be
played in the evenings and on
weekends
at
the
Scavone/Walker field in
Portland. The team will be
part of the Portland City
League and will play its first
game in June.
Coach Roeder said of the
season, “This is a well-
balanced, tough league with
the difference between first
and second place a break or
two.”
Roeder described his team
as a real “diversification of
personalities.” He said, “I
guess you’d say it made for an
interesting coaching ex
perience. The team was loaded
with talent, but did not have
the right personality mixture
to form a really good team.”
He added that in some areas
the team “lacked dedication.
It was a learning situation for
all involved. I’m sure it will
make us all better individuals
in the long run.
The team was made up of
“personalities that were
likeable, the kind of people
you like to associate with each
day. In short, this season will
help develop character for
future participation in
baseball,” he said.
Roeder said the weather was
favorable for them since none
of the home games were
cancelled. The team played a
total of 37 games.
“We didn’t end up too
bad,” Roeder said. “We were
just two games out of second
place. If we had won both
games against Lane CC, there
would have been a four-way
tie for second.”
Overall, Mount Hood Com
munity College placed first in
the league with Lane in second
place. These two teams now go
to Yakima Valley to compete.

jump and long jump. In the
triple jump, Orblum grabbed
third place with a jump of
47’2”. The jump was also
good enough to tie the Col
lege’s record set in 1978 by
Dave Reed.
“Orblum did really well,”
Coach Buck Monroe said, ad
ding “He’s a potential 50-foot
jumber (in the triple jump).”
In the long jump, Orblum
leaped to a distance of 22’7”.
Although the jump fell over a
foot short of his College
record, it was good enough to
give him second place in the
meet.

Durkee led for much of the
race, but was edged out in the
end. He was forced to drop
out of the 5000 meter race due
to water cramps.
Durkee said he plans to con
tinue training and he hopes to
cut 45 seconds off his time in
the 5,000 when he competes in
Springfield in June.
Mark Allen ran the grueling
10,000 and finished eighth
with a time of 33:24. Despite
the heat, Allen’s time was his
second best of the season.
“Allen ran hard in a pretty
tough field,” Coach Monroe
said.
