Top Clackamas tracksters
qualify for championships
By Rodney Fobert
Of The Print
Competing in the Region IV
Track and Field Champion
ships on May 10 and 11, the
team from Clackamas Com
munity College posted a
number of oustanding
finishes. The sparse turn-out
for track at Clackamas
prevented the Cougar team
from placing high at the meet,
which was won by Lane Com
munity College.
Freshman Chris Orblum not
only won the long jump, he
also broke the College’s school
record for the event. The
previous record of 23-4 set in.
1982 by Marcell Douglas, has
now been replaced by
Orblum’s winning jump of
23-8%.
Orblum also grabbed se
cond place in the triple jump
with a distance of 45 feet.
1 Coach Monroe, however,
pointed out that Orblum,
“had a couple of good scrat
ches that might have won.”
Orblum also competed in the
100-meter dash and placed
sixth in the event.
Running in the 1500, Rob
Durkee was narrowly edged
out, and placed second. His
time of 3:50.9 was not only a
personal best mark for
Durkee, it was also better than
the previous meet record
which was set in 1980. The
winner of the race recorded a
time of 3:49.8.
Coach Monroe said, “I
thought Rob would win the
1500, but I wasn’t disap
pointed. The 1500 is com
petitive. You’ve got to be a
good runner.” Monroe added,
“Any other year he might

$21000
That’s Army math. It means that after 2 years of
college (60 semester hours or equivalent) and a 2-year
enlistment, you could have up to $21,000 to continue
your education. Courtesy of the New GI Bill + New
Army College Fund. (Effective July 1,1985).
That other 2 means you can get two years of
ROTC credit by enrolling in ROTC at the third year
level (with the approval of the college’s Professor of
Military Science) when you reenter college. You’ll earn
$100 a month in ROTC.
Qualify, and you’ll start your enlistment with a
promotion. And just because you’re out of school
doesn’t mean you stop learning. VCfe’ll teach you a skill
that can help you go places later.
And you’ll go places now, because we give soldiers
an opportunity to travel. And a chance to make new
friends.
Not to mention a lot of money for college. Plus the

have won.”
Also turning in a good
finish for the Clackamas team
at the two-day event was Mark
Allen. Allen ran to a second
place finish in the 10,000 with
a time of 33:11. He turned in a
fourth place finish in the
5,000.
The Cougars will be sending
five athletes to the NWAACC
Championships on May 17
and 18. The conference
athletes are required to meet a
particular qualifying mark in
their event in order to par
ticipate in the meet. Top
qualifiers from Oregon and
Washington will compete in
the championships which will
be held in Spokane, Wash.
At the NWAACC meet,
Durkee will be attempting to
avenge his recent defeat when’
he runs the 1500, while
teamate Allen will compete in
the 10,000. Coach Monroe
predicts that “Rob and Mark
will have a shot at winning,”
adding that Durkee and Allen
“have had a good year.”
Orblum will also be com-
