Berney ’s grapplers take first in tournament

Wash, for the Pacific
Lutheran University (PLU) In
vitational wrestling tourna
ment. •
Clackamas won the tourna
ment, with many of the
Cougar wrestlers placing high
in their divisions. Head Coach
Norm Berney is happy with
the performance of his
wrestlers, who have been com-
peteing mainly against four-
year colleges. “We’re not only
beating them, we’re beating
them soundly,” Berney said,
adding “It’s been a good year
so far.”
Many high placers in the
tournament last Saturday
resulted in the Cougars winn
ing the tournament. In the
lightest category of 118
pounds, Cougar wrestler Ran
dy Thomas placed fifth. In the
126-pound category John
Wachsmuth placed second and
Allen Kimmell placed third for
Clackamas.
At 134 pounds, Tom Man-
nen wrestled his way to a first
place, as did Chuck Calhoun
in the 150-pound division.
“He (Calhoun) really did an
excellent job,” Berney said of
the Cougar wrestler. Also, at
150 pounds was Randy Brad
bury who placed fifth for the
Clackamas team.
Larry Joe Tanner and Frank
McKinnis were also victorious
in the divisions of 158 and 167
pounds, respectively. At 167
pounds Tony Hickey was nar
rowly edged out to take third
place.
At 190 pounds, Tim
Markum placed second as did
Kris Tellegen in the Heavy
weight division. Missing from
the Cougar team on Saturday
was Robert Young, who has
been having trouble with a
pulled hamstring. The
Cougars beat the second-place
team, PLU, by 12 points.
Coming up on Jan. 24 the
Cougars have a home match
with Southwestern Oregon
Community College. On Jan.
25 the Clackamas wrestlers
will participate in the Oregon
