By Doug Vaughan
Of The Print
The trio of Shari Hilton,
Debbie Koffel and Lynn
Smyth dominated the javelin
throw at Regionals placing in
the top three.
The three showed their
supremacy once again, but this
time at the national meet.

respectively, was enough to
power the Lady Cougs to an
eighth place overall finish.
Hilton had won the regional ti
tle earlier this month and cap
tured the national crown with
a 157-6 toss. Koffel fired the
spear 143-8 and. Smyth 136-4.
The two-mile relay, con
sisting of Petra Johnson, Suzy
Thompson, Vicki Anderson
and Tami Flores, placed fifth
for Clackamas with a time of
9:31.56. Anderson captured a
fifth place individually in the
intermediate hurdles with a
1:04 blaze.
While the women’s cap
tured a respectable eighth
place the men’s team was
fighting for a high showing.
Going into the meet Kelly
Sullivan, assistant coach,
didn’t expect miracles.
“I was very pleased with
our performance. We had two
school records broke in a field
that was the toughest I have
seen at this level,” Sullivan
said.
Distance runner Matt
Parker looked to be on his way
to a national crown going into
the last lap of the 1500, but
was passed by two opponents
in the last stretch. Parker end
ed up with a third place finish,
less than a half a second
behind the winning time.
Parker’s time of 3:49.78 was
marked by Sullivan as
“outstanding.”
Sullivan said that the first
and second place finishers , in
the 1500 both were represen
tatives of their foreign coun
tries’ Olympic teams.
Jeff Tressler broke
Clackamas’ school record
twice over, but it wasn’t
enough to place at the meet. In
his first heat, Tressler ran a
47.8 400 meters, and then top
ped it the second heat with a
47.6 running.
Yul Provancha also set a
school record in the 800 with a
1:50.9. Due to the fast times in

As a team the men placed

Sullivan wasn’t concerned

“The only area I wish we
