Hoopers farewell in early season tourneys

The 1983-84 basketball season is
in full swing and with what head coach
Royce Kiser has seen of his team so far,
he is projecting an optimistic outlook
for this season.
“They are going to be pretty fair
before the year’s over if we don’t get
any injuries,” Kiser stated. The
Cougars split their two games at the
Walla-Walla Invitational and placed
third in their opening action of the year
at the College of the Siskyous.
Bob Nippert’s 17 points and a
balanced scoring attack, which saw
four Cougars hit double figures, was
not enough to overcome a stubborn
Bellevue Community College squad as
Kiser’s team was bested 81-76, in the
first round of the Walla-Walla tourna
ment. “Year in and year out Bellevue
has a good team up there
Washington,” Kiser said. “We got
beat in the last six minutes, we should
have won the game.”
Nippert also led the Cougar team
in rebounding with nine. “Nippert is a
much improved player from a year
ago,” the coach said. Bellevue held a
slight edge in the rebounding collum
46-42.
Clackamas bounced back the next
day to dispence of Portland Communi
ty College in convincing fashion 87-72.
Frosh guard Pete Newlin converted 11
of 15 from the field and ended with 24
points to pace the Cougars.
The Cougars pounced on the
Portland club early and held a 42-33
advanage at the half. A relentless scor
ing attack, which saw the Oregon City
team shoot a blistering 64 percent from
the floor, would prevent the Portland
Squad from cutting the gap.
Kiser feels only now are his big
men coming around. “It takes some of
the bigger players a little longer to get
in shape,” he explained. “Perregrin
started slow but has come on real
strong (nine rebounds and seven points
versus Portland) over the last week.”
With his starting back court
tandem plagued with injuries early in
the season Kiser feels only now are they
beginning to produce effectively.
“Both (Jerry) Olson and (Tim) Gard
ner were hurt. They are playing much
better and gave us a lift.” The two
combined for 16 points and were six of
eight from the floor.
The Cougars won two of three in
the Siskyous tournaments, held in
Weed, Calif., the week prior.
Sophomore Mike Imper averaged 15
points per game and was named to the
All-Tournament team.
Imper and Newlin combined for
37 points, and Rodger Edwards grabb
ed 13 rebounds as the Cougars whip
ped Mendicino 80-60, in the first
round. “When he’s (Edwards) hustling
he plays pretty well,” Kiser said of the
freshman forward.
Shasta Junior College, last year’s
California state champs, held
Clackamas to a dismal 30 percent from
the floor, and ran away from the
Cougs 64-48, in the second round.
A limited offensive attack which
saw four players score all but four of
team’s 66 points was enough to turn
back the College of the Redwoods
66-63, for third place.
Edwards again led all Coug re
bounders with 14 markers.
First home action for Clackamas
is Dec. 3, against Clark College at 8:00.
