Matmen split win, loss over weekend
By Doug Vaughan
Of The Print
A weekend of travel
brought a win, a loss, and a
beam of light from the tunnel
to
Regionals for the
Clackamas Community Col
lege wrestling team as they
were hosted by Big Bend Com
munity College and North
Idaho last Friday and Satur
day, respectively.
Friday night the Cougars
competed against a tough Big
Bend team who they had
previously beaten at the Col
lege Jan. 21. The outcome was
again determined by the final
match as Tim Sytsma controll
ed Steve Penrose for a Cougar
victory with a 7-3 decision.
Saturday it was on to
Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, to face
the challenge of the season,
North Idaho Community Col
lege. The Cougars were
dominated by the nationally
ranked college as Clackamas
went down in defeat 36-11.
“They (North Idaho)
have beat a lot of the top four-
year schools,” Coach Norm
Berney explained. “They are
in the top three on the West
Coast and I do not think
anybody would argue with
me.”
North Idaho will be the
Cougars main competition at
Regionals and a step in the
direction of improvement was
noticed by Berney as well as
the opposing coach.
“Their coach talked to
me on how we have
improved,” Berney said.
“Hopefully we will be strong
and ready to compete against
them (at Regionals).”

Also putting in an ex
cellent performance for the
Cougars was Dan Martin at
158 pounds as he tied a North
Idaho wrestler who had
previously lost just twice, both
to four year schools.
A solid showing was also
prevelent in Mike Bolf.
Despite moving up a weight in
Idaho, Bolf kept a clean
record with a 9-3 arid 17-4
decisions.
“Even though we did
lose, we have a lot of good
things that did happen,”
Berney said.
The Cougars will know
who their toughest competi
tion will be for the Regional
tournament, Feb. 18-19, and
they have their work cut out
for them to prepare for the
showdown. Berney feels the
Cougars have the physical
aspect: it is just a matter of
pulling the mental side
together.
“We have some people
who have some doubt in
themselves. We are just going
to have to pull everything
together,” Berney said. “We
have had the toughest schedule
in the College’s history, so our
meet record is misleading. We
have to realize we are ready to
compete at that (the Regional)
level.
“We still haven’t been cut
down to weight so there are
things we can do to improve
ourselves,” the coach said.
“Regionals is a whole different
season. This is what we work
for the whole year--it is a
chance of a lifetime.”

“It is not to make ex
cuses. It is just to know we
have to buckle down and im
prove,” Berney said. “Our
goal now is to get a trophy at
Regionals, and qualify as
many wrestlers for nationals
as possible.
“The whole thing will de
pend on how we compete. We
have the bodies to do it,”
Berney explained.

City College last weekend. The
pair of victories upped the
Cougars record to 18-6 while
Vancouver dropped to 16-6.
Kathy Strickler scored 21
points in each game to lead
Clackamas to the 73-63, 64-53
respective wins. The decisions
proved costly for the Cougs,
however, as standout guard
Denise Wheatley went down
with a sprained ankle.
Wheatley could be back in ac
tion in just a week.
Coach Phil Garver was
quick to emphasize the all-
around team ball the Cougars
displayed. “We played ex
cellent team ball and we got a
lot of help off the bench,”
Garver stated. “We had three
people in double figures in
each game and a lot of people
scored.”
Sherry Bull, Sharon Lar
son, and Cyd McCormick
combined for 24 points off the
bench. Suzy Graham and
Tami Arbini also received
praise from Garver.
Jamie Hill scored 15
points and grabbed six re
bounds against the much taller
Vancouver team. “Their front
line was 6’1”, 6’0”, and
5’11”. They were big and they
were a really good team,”
GarVer pointed out.
In the second game,
Strickler’s 21 was backed up
by a balanced attack. Jamie
Hill hit for 15 while Terry Kel
ly and Cyd McCormick added
10 each.

Clackamas relied on a hot
offensive performance to
secure the win. The Cougars

“Kathy Strickler’s game

Garver assessed. The 5’7”
