arts Speech travel hinges on funds By J. Dana Haynes Of The Print Frank Harlow; coach of the Clackamas Community College speech team, has re quested money to send at least five players to a Nationals tour nament. The request was made at last week’s Associated Students Government meeting (Please see article, page four) .The total amount needed is $2,900. However, Harlow is only re questing $1,000 from the ASG. “I still have to talk to Presi dent (John) Hakanson about going to the school board,” Harlow said. “Last year, I went to the school board, the ASG, and I pitched in my own travel funds ... I must have hit every source I knew.” Frank Harlow File Photo Jazz ensembles to perform at Harry’s By J. Dana Haynes Of The Print Thursday night the Clackamas Community Col lege music department will take their act on the road. The rhythm section and Vocal Jazz Ensemble (VJE) will perform at Harry’s Mustache Restaurant, 19195 South Molalla Avenue, located less than a mile from the campus. The gig will run from 8:30 p.m. - 12:30 a.m. with no cover charge. “This was a joint project between Harry’s and myself,” Choral Director Lonnie Cline said. The Rhythm Section and VJE are the second act from the College to hit Harry’s this year. The Theater Projects class performed a one-act show there two weeks ago for the Sunday Open-Mike Night. “These shows give our students an outlet to do some outside work,” Cline said. “It’s good for them.” Donations will be ac cepted, and money raised will go toward travel expenses for the music department. Future trips include a festival at the University of California, Berkeley, to which the VJE and the Instrumental Jazz Ensemble (IJE) have been in vited, a competition in Pasco, Washington for the IJE, and a trip to Victoria, British Colum bia for the Chorale and Brass Band. The ASG moved the issue to their Ways and Means Com-> mittee for consideration. The next Board of Education meeting is Wednesday, Feb. 9. The speakers who qualified for Nationals are Scott Van Cleave, Teresa Svatos, Linda Perkins, Sue Dumolt and Bob Bales. To qualify for the national competition, one must “trophy,’/ or place in the top two or three at a tournament of 17 or more schools. Dumolt and Perkins both trophied at a 31-school tourney at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. Four other College speakers may yet qualify, Harlow said. They are Ward Moore, Julie Van Orman, Mel Wright and Lisa Baller. I whether or not they will fund us remains to be seen.” Last year, the Board of Presidents for the community colleges of Oregon voted to curtail all national travel for sports events. President Hakanson, and the College’s Board of Education, disagreed with the Council and withdrew from the athletic league. Nationals will be held in San Antonio, Texas, this year, and will be April 6-12. “It would be very disap pointing for these people to qualify for nationals and then hot be able to go,” Harlow said. “The players deserve it. We could be very competitive,” he added. “We would definite ly come home with ‘hardware (trophies),’ if they do what’s ex pected of them.” “I’m caught right in the middle of a political action with the deans,” Harlow said. “They have made a committ ment for national travel, but Harlow said 74 teams from across the nation will compete in San Antonio. “Out of 74 schools, we could be in the top ten,” he said. If you have moral, ethical, or religious objections to participation in any war or military training, you can be a conscientious' objector. One can be a CO regardless of one's religion: an agnostic or atheist can make a CO claim based on deeply held, personal beliefs. The Central Com mittee for Conscientious Objectors is an Organization engaged ih a nation-wide effort to inform people about Conscien tious objection and re lated peace.issues. We are also registering conscientious objectors with our CO card. This card ' simply states: “Because of my beliefs about war, I am opposed to partici pation in the military.” Should the draft . be reinstated, and this is becoming increasingly likely, a CO card could provide important documentation of your status as an objector.
