sports Baseball team evens record By Tracy Teigland Of The Print The College baseball team had a record of 7-5, until they lost to Linn-Benton twice last week, 13-7 and 4-1, bringing the record to 7-7. The team has 10 games left to play, and they need to win at least nine of them to make it to region a Is. On Saturday, the Clackamas men lost to Linn-Benton, 13-7. Coach Gene Peterson made no excuses. “They just took us on that one,” he said. Thurs day the team lost, 4-1. Peter son stated, “The loss was due to an error that cost us four runs.”^ So far the team has had four of their games postponed because of rain. These were all league games, and will have to be made up. Peterson mentioned Craig Volimas (third base), Jamie Jonely (short stop), Kyle Erwin (center field), Steve Mills (left field), Mike Gardener (second base) and Gary Schmellding (first base), as a few of the outstanding players. Doug Swain and Larry Jones have been the main men on the mound this year. However, they are backed up by almost 10 other pitchers. Most of thé Clackamas men are involved , in a Portland league baseball team for the summer. Peterson expects to have a more experienced team next year because of this. The baseball season ends May 8, with a game against Umpqua CC. Peterson and his team are hoping for some HIT THE DECK-The Cougars lost twice to Linn-Benton in the past week, 4*1 ant 13-7. Netters boast near perfection By Wanda Percival The College women’s tennis team brought their season record to 8-1 as they fell to Lewis and Clark College’s Var sity team, 9-0, on Monday after defeating Concordia Col lege, 7-0 on Friday. Usually, community colleges play at university J.V. levels, but “we played Lewis and Clark’s varsity team to ensure top caliber competition,” said Coach Gladys Michael. “You don’t go into that expecting to win. Nobody was blown out, they were all able to hit with them.” Michael said, “Everybody is playing very well right down through player number 10. There’s been great im- provements all the way through the line-up.” ' Cougar women have met GETTING THE STANCE RIGHT—Clackamas had a 7-5 record prior to last Thursday, but dropped to 7-7 by the end of Saturday. The sparse crowd that re mained after hours of rigorous competition was left in awe as Ben Silva, who had lifted 420 pounds in the winter competi tion, walked up to the bench, slowly lowered himself under the bar, paused for a few minutes, then began to lift the evening maximum, 345 pounds. Following Silva’s lift, the long hours of preparation were about to begin for the next competition. A women’s' division had been set up for the- competi tion, but only one girl showed up, Angela Karlsey, who lifted 105 pounds. With the opening weight at 95 pounds, the amount in- creased by 10-pound in- crements. The peak of weightlifters was between 235 and 285 pounds.
