Wednesday, November 12, Sullivan heads men runners Who is Kelly Sullivan and what is he doing at Clackamas College? Kelly Sullivan is living a dream and it entails coaching the 1980 Men’s Cross Country team at the College. Sullivan attended Clackamas from 1975 to 1977. He com­ peted on the cross country squad arid represented the Cougars in the 1976 National Junior College Championship. He completed his education at Willamette University earning a Cougar teams show excellence By Rick Obritschkewitsch Both the men and women’s cross country teams made it to the Junior NCAA Cross Coun­ try championships--the Cougar Volleyball Team is headed into regional action, and the soccer team has plans to win the OISA State Title next Sunday. All in all the fall sports teams have given the College some very exciting and impressive action. .The men’s Cross Country team had one returning athlete from last season, Jim Colgan, last year’s number one runner. The rest were new additions to the Cougar team, including Coach Kelly Sullivan. Among the freshmen run­ ners recruited, three were state high school champions, two were All-American selections, and 11 All-State in either cross country or track. The men won at both regional and state levels com­ peted Tn the Junior NCAA championship. The women thinclads,' like the men had a small return of last year’s runners. Like the men, their number one runner returned from last season. For the women it was Nancy Reynolds. They 'also gained two runners from the track team, Becky Kokesh and Carolyn Raimondi, and Marcie Fisher. Only four women were recruited as freshmen runners for the women’s team..In their first race, the women gave Coach Marilyn Linsenmeyer some surprises. One of the freshmen, Debbie Simon was a AAA State High School Champion. The women, like the men, also took their running abilities to the nationals. The Cougar Volleyball team has had an outstanding season, with 26 wins and only five losses. The team now is preparing to compete in the regionals on Nov. 21 and 22. Like the cross country team, only one person returned from last season’s team, Debbie Nolz. Nolz won All-State and All-Metro honors in previous seasons. Ronda Westeren and Carol Ziemba also won All-State and All-Metro honors prior to this season, Jamie Hill and Cyd McCor­ mick won All-State honors, and Lou Ann Garvin was an All-Metro winner. The Soqcer team has shown its excellence with a 9-0 record in regular season action, and will compete for the OISA Page 12 championship next Sunday. The soccer team has the ad­ vantage of having . seven players returning from last year, with four freshmen who are starters, Jeff Johnson, Tim Olson, Jim Keough, and Rick Zyelinskie. In their first three games the kickers had' scored an im­ pressive 20 goals. degree in general education with an emphasis on history and physical education, for three consecutive seasons in/ cross country, he earned All­ State and All-Americari- honors. In track, he earned All­ State and All-American laurels for two competitive seasons. At the 1978 Cahada-USA Track Meet, Sullivan competed in the steeplechase event. An even higher honor occured when Sullivan represented the U.S. at the 1979 World Cup games- at Mexico City. During the interview Coach Sullivan revealed his desire; to coach and always dreamed of returning to Clackamas. A two- year school provides Kelly the luxury of coaching without pressure and truly enjoying the pleasure of coaching young adults. His philosophy is such that running is fun and athletes should compete without the KELLY SULLIVAN awesome pressures many face at major universities. Sullivan recruits exclusively in the state of Oregon and Oregon posesses a wealth of untapped talent.
