Wind power II
Incentive tax credits offered
By T.L. Jeffries
Last issue,- Mike Aronson,
physics instructor, suggested a
feasibility study would be
necessary to determine
whether or not some of the
College’s energy needs could
be produced by using wind
power.
To do this, a generator must
be constructed. Here are some
facts and figures that should be
considered by any individual or
small business thinking of utiliz
ing this resource.
Tower size depends on any
tall trees that might act as a
windbreak, or the altitude that
the strongest wind currents can
be found at. Tower heights

The ability of the average
homeowner to afford a wind
system is due mainly to recent
federal and state legislation that
authorizes tax credits, long-,
term low interest loans, and'
property tax exemption fpr

nate energy, systems/ A
homeowner that sets up a
system that* provides at least
ten percent of their energy re
quirements can claim a federal
tax credit of 30 percent of the
first $2,000 and 20 percent of
the next $8,000-spent on the
system. An Oregon incorne tax
credit can also be claimed for
25 percent of total cost, up to a
maximum credit of $1,000.
Long term loans at six and
one-half percent interest are
also available thanks to the
Oregon Legislature’s passage
of Senate Bill No. 611, which
will become effective by 1981.
This, Jn addition to the tax
credits and the exemption that
states that property cannot be
taxed for the increase in value
due to the addition of an
energy system, has made these
systems not only more attrac
tive, but more possible for the
average homeowner to have
constructed on their property.
