The Friday night coffee houses, the Student Information Network (SIN), legal aid for students, a change in the school publicity position and a new ad ministrative assistant for ASG all came as a result of McCar ty’s leadership. Through SIN, McCarty helped to promote a tighter unity between ASG and the College by “showing the students that we are interested in giving them information.” Legal aid came on campus for a short time this year, but the Oregon State Bar Association required payment by the cam pus attorney for giving free ad vice. “Now they’ll have to budget money so one can be hired on a part-time basis,” McCarty said . The former publicity position was not generating enough revenue, McCarty believed. “The promotion of activities was too much for one person, so when the football team and rally squad went out, I grabbed the tuition waiver that was available and created Media Director and Art Director, two postions filled this year by Happie Thacker and Marty Sayles,” he said. By creating the admnistrative assistant position, “we got student representation in every activity that came off,” McCar ty said. . “The student assocation was growing all the time and needed added representation. The commit tees on campus are massive. I grabbed the tuition waiver that was available and created a needed position,” he said. McCarty agreed that his responsibilities as president were “much more intense in the beginning. The more in volved I am the better off I am,” said McCarty. “The more time I can till with positive, creative things, the more fun it is. It is a lot of fun, a lot of work. You are really given a lot of power in what you can do with your staff and create relationships within the association of the student body.” “Because of his leadership, Mike helped cut down on student apathy and increased student involvement,” said Michele Miles, a firt-year senator in ASG. “He’s the type of person who can get along with both students and staff. "You have to keep rolling,” McCarty says, photo by Kelly Laughlin be a tough act to follow,” she added. Among the largest accom plishments McCarty and ASG promoted were first, an • adequate representatiion of the | students at Clackamas, and second, a positive reflection of the ASG’s responsibility among staff and administration. “We showed that we aren’t kids playing student government, but responsible adults who can make judgements and decisions,” McCarty said. With a “business knack” already intact for McCarty, he said he lives in a day-to-day reality, and offers this advice to the incoming president: “You can’t worry about the student newspaper sticking you next week, for something you said last week. You don’t need to dwell , on things; you have to keep rolling. The one quality that can make or break a student government is a lack of involvement, which I think Don (Porter) doesn’t have to worry about. He’s a very high-energy individual,” he said. From CCC, McCarty has several options open for his future. A possible board position, law school and finishing his degree in business at Portland State University are some of the roads he considers taking. McCarty has left his mark on Clackamas, and has made sure that student government is no longer a make-shift operation. “The next person who comes in my old office has some in formation to look back on. They’ll find it, whether it be one year or five years from now. Filing cabinets, binders and folders are packed with infor mation that will never be thrown away,” McCarty said. In a unique way, Mike Mc- Carty’s presence will never leave the College. He and the growth of ASG have promoted a responsibility and dedication not soon to be forgotten on the CCC campus.
