opinion Campus dialogue To The Editor: I would like to take the opportunity to respond tol System fails We would like to thank both the Board of Education and the faculty members for their efforts in averting the threatened faculty strike at Clackamas Community Col lege. Although no one wanted a strike, it also seemed, for a while at least, that no one was willing to make the necessary compromises in order to avoid one. We are glad that a fair compromise was finally agreed upon since it is our opinion that everyone would have suffered and little would have been gained by a prolonged strike. With the recent rash of bargaining disputes and threatened or actual strikes by teachers throughout the state maybe it's time everyone took another look at the present system of settling these matters determining instructors salaries. There must be an alternative to a system that is not working and it should be found before we are involved in another situation like this year's. sprint PUBLICATIONS STAFF 19600 S. In particular, Nickel wanted to thank ASG President Mike McCarty for his efforts in recruiting students from other institutions to go door-to-door on behalf of Clackamas; for mailing flyers to summer school students; for distributing signs in the community and for putting up signs on campus. All these efforts were in addition to his constant reminders to our own students to vote on August 9. Our victory would not have been nearly so overwhelming without the enthusiastic support and help of the students. We are deeply appreciative, and Nickel wanted the students to have this specific written recognition of our gratitude. Thank you. John W. Hakanson President, CCC points raised by Steve Bolkan in the Feedback section ofl issue. My comments are not directed at his point of a bia naire for the Athletic Commission. I have seen that theluj is not the only information source for data on this tl there is a large scale attempt to secure input from ml interest groups. I would like to consider the issue of the communitlo its role—or, as Bolkan phrases it, the function and goal The law (ORS 341.009) defines the boundaries of th# college system. I am into my second year at CCC and I vividly recalltfl told at freshman orientation to "Get Involved." I've hear® words numerous times since that first day. I do not hearai ing us to strive for that education and keep our grades should "get involved" in all of these extra curricular goodies-s plays, parties, student government, etc. 1 For every 15 credit hours, a student should be preparedtos another 30 hours a week in order to stay on top. This is45hl studying. I know of quite a few people here that are studentsca a full load, besides which are employed and many are married families. At a time when schools all over the country are badly in nee funds it seems a bit strange that we would have ample tospen activities that no one seems to be interested in. Many people here are financed by the Vet's, DVR's, CETA I would imagine some of them aren't too concerned where 1 cent of their fees end up. I wonder what would happen ifilW1 departed CCC along with their part of the $35,405 that student ernment has control of. Personally, I don't have the time or energy for extra turn activities. I do agree these things are important to a certaw el but I feel that there should be more emphasis stressed on edud than involvement. After all, that's what it's all about, isn't it?! David R.
