opinion FRANKLY SPEAKING Legal beagle The Associated Student Government of Clackamas Community College and Mike McCarty are to be con gratulated for spending the money and taking the time to attend the Legal Aid Conference in Kansas City last week. Out of all the colleges and universities in Oregon, CCC was the only one to send a representative to a conference dealing with what could possibly be the biggest student issue of the seventies — the legal rights and responsibili ties of students. It has been suggested that if students would have had the legal knowledge and outlets that they now have we could all have avoided the riots and bloodshed of the sixties. However, if students don't know how to use these rights and have no way of implementing the ones they do know about, then these rights are useless. A student legal-aid program on campus would bring the right of legal recourse and advice to even the poorest student. The conference also gave McCarty a chance to meet students from other schools and find out how they are dealing with problems common to all college communi ties and also learn aboaut situations that are purely regional in nature. Perhaps one of the greater benefits of attending a national conference over one where only the Western states are represented is this opportunity to become familiar with regional differences on a personal level. This could only result in a better educated student government president-one who seems to have good ideas for helping students. This letter is in regard to the Oct. 6 edition of The Print,! cally on the Athletic Commission's decision to consult the 1 staff, students, and community at-large for their feelings onwl or not Clackamas Community College should participate in g collegiate athletics. The athletic commission stated they had decided to pas questionnaire concerning the "community's" opinion on in collegiate athletics at the Oct. 8 football game. Now I ask the rea is this a fair place to pass a questionnaire concerning the import of intercollegiate athletics? Not to me. This action is similar] taking a poll in favor of crime a,t a penitentiary and I believe commission's innovativeness should be questioned in referenffl this decision. A question the athletic commission and board of directorsshq consider is what is the function and goal of a community college. 1 answer, of course, is to prepare the student for continuing on tfl four-year college or train the student in a vocational trade, f short, the community college's goal is to provide an education skill. I feel that his goal has been inhibited by CCC's involvement; intercollegiate athletics. I would like to add, in conclusion, that I am not against sjj but I feel that the priority of an institution for learning should be| education. Athletics is a very important part of our society; hj ever, an education is primary. A brief comparison of the pref science building (Orchard Center) and the impressive, well equi ped, and costly gym (Randall Hall) will demonstrate without a doubt that athletics has the priority over an education at ClackT Community College Steve Bolkan 325 W.
