Generals capture tournament;
wrestlers ready for Corvallis
MIKE HARRIS attempts jump shot during game with the Lake
Oswego Lakers. The Generals dumped the number two ranked
Lakers 69-41 last Friday.
G-Men ramble past Lake Oswego,
search for victory in South Salem
by Steve Johnson
The varsity basketball squad
will travel down the valley to
night, in search of a victory, as
they play the tough South Salem
Saxons. Then, at 4 p.m. Tuesday,
the Generals will play their first
pre-season home game against a
young Washington Colonial team.
Varsity Coach Ed Rooney
feels that the Generals will
have their hands full with
the Saxons. In their pre-sea
son debut, the Salem squad
rolled up 89 points while
beating South Eugene, who,
as Coach Rooney says, “are
always rated among the top
teams in the state.”
The Washington Colonials, on
the other hand, are young and
inexperienced, as most of their
eagers played junior varsity ball
last year. This seems to be a
building year for them.
The Generals will be
seeking revenge against the
Colonials, because of the
two straight whippings last
year’s team gave the G-Men.
Mr. Rooney plans to continue
using the two-platoon system of
substitutions, at least through
the six-game pre-season sched
ule, that he has made familiar to
General fans.
The G-Men also will con
tinue to use a two post men
and three guard setup on
offense.
Mr. .Rooney also cited Bill
Flowers and Mike Naylor as
especially dedicated about keep-
ing in shape, because both boys
ran for the cross country team
this fall. Mike, in his first year
of cross country competition at
Grant, participated in the state
varsity meet. Bill, also running
for the first time, went to State
as the alternate.
In action last Friday the
G-Men bounced away from the
Lake Oswego Lakers 69-41.
The Generals never fell be
hind and gained a commanding
lead throughout the first half.
The team held the lead during
the second half. The team was
led by Bill Flowers who dropped
in nine baskets which gained
him 18 points. The Generals
were helped by the fact that two
of the Lake Oswego starting five
fouled out during the second
half.

The Grant wrestling fans
cheered the varsity A team to
victory at the Invitational held
at Grant last Saturday.
The G-Men captured the
tournament with a substan
tial total of 92 points with
Marshall and Gresham ty
ing for second with 79 points
each and Wy-East following
with 30 points.
The Generals placed top in
six of the 13 weight classifica
tions, ranging from 98 pounds to
heavyweight. The Grantonians
winning in their divisions were
Jesus Lopez, 115; Gene Kerns,
1^3; Bill Curry, 136; Dave Gray,
141; Mike Reinecker, 148; and
Ward Bruner, 191.
The teams rotated each
round. First it was Grant
vs. Marshall and Wy-East
vs. Gresham. The second
round pitted the two top
scoring teams, Grant and
Gresham, while Wy-East
battled Marshall. The third
round brought Grant against
Wy-East and Gresham
against Marshall.
In the B varsity competition
the Generals took second behind
Marshall. Trailing the two lead
ers were Gresham and Wy-East
respectively. The Grant wres
tlers that were top of their
weight classes were Barry Has
son, Bill Lott, Bob Lott, Craig
Johnson and Dan Baisley.
The first round of the A var
sity found Gresham leading with
47 points with the Generals in
second with 33, followed by Mar
shall 16 and Wy-East 8. The sec
ond round brought Grant closer
to victory with a total of 60%
points, but still leading was
Gresham with 66 points, fol
lowed by Marshall 54% and Wy-
East 21. In the last round the
Generals picked up six pins and
two forfeits to capture the lead
and the tournament.
This Saturday the wrestling
team, led by Coach Robert Shew-
bert, will go to Corvallis Invita
tional, starting at 11 a.m.
Volleyball games
commence play in
girls intramurals
by Roy Greene
For the past week girls have
been practicing volleyball for
games that will be played in the
future. The coach of the girls’
intramurals is Miss Carolyn
Fitzwater, who will also coach
them in basketball and badmin
ton.
The girls’ volleyball team is
broken into three squads. There
is the freshman team, sopho
more-junior team, and the jun
ior-senior team. The names of
the teams are as in order, Wee
gees, Peewees, and the Porcius
Maximae. Along with our three
teams there are seven other
teams which will be in competi
tion with each other. There will
be three games played by each
team every time they meet.
In the middle of January the
girls will start a new unit in
basketball and they will be
broken into two teams. There
will be a freshman team and a
junior-senior team. Sophomores
may also play on the junior-sen
ior team if they are good enough.
THE GRANTONIAN
Gymnastics group
assembles team;
first meet date set
by Roy Greene
For the first year we are go
ing to have a gymnastics team,
which will be one of seven teams
competing in the city. Mr. Gra
ham, the gymnastics coach, has
been practicing with-the boys so
they will be ready for their first
meet on January 9.
In the years* past Grant hasn’t
had a gymnastic team, but a
club. This means that they
haven’t been in a real meet be
fore. They only practiced when
ever they felt like it. Although
it is their first year as a team,
Mr. Graham feels that it’s going
to be a good team, as proven
when he said, “There is a lot of
talent.”
After the,first meet in Janu
ary there will be a meet every
week on Thursday. Towards the
end of February comes the city
championship, then a week later
comes the district meet, and the
following week comes the state
finals.
