Cogers open season

G-men pitted against Lake Oswego

The G-Men open the basket
ball season tonight as they meet
the Lake Oswego Lakers at
Lake Oswego in what has been
called a well matched game.
“The team is as good as
I have had in four years
and they are the quickest
I have had in ten,” stated
Ed Rooney, head basketball
coach.
The Generals have one starter
returning from last year in Bill
Flowers, while Lake Oswego
has three.
Probable starters for to
night’s game will be Bill
Flowers, Steve Crane, Ar
tie Wilson, Mike Naylor
and either Gary Johnson or
Don Lincoln.
Lake Oswego is returning
from last year with a district
crown and a second place show
ing in the state tournament. Ac
cording to Oswego coach Sonny
Long they are again favored to
take their league.
“The team is very good,
they have a balanced scor
ing position and they like
to play, a strong defense,”
stated Coach Long.
“Lake Oswego is one of the
top teams in the state. We play
them twice during the season.
Tonight’s game should be good
as they have a good team. One
thing going for us though is
our speed,” stated Coach Roo
ney.

'Nielsen’s Animals’ show promise

They are called “Nielsen’s
Animals,” all 59 of them, and
they plan to live up to their
coach’s expectations of a “great
bunch of kids.”
Two wrestling jerseys have
been made for the “players of
the week” with the words “Niel
sen’s Animals” arched across the
top. Also, an animal chart was
made with the standings of each
member inserted. At the top of
the chart stands the devilish im
age of a little general with his
blue and grey hat cocked to one
side.
“It’s tough-to get freshmen in
each weight division,” stated
coach Thomas Nielsen. “We still
have a couple of spots open.”
A good percentage of the
frosh football team has turned
out for wrestling.
Coach Nielsen spotted a few
wrestlers for their promising
ability. These boys are: Mark
Johnson at 98 pounds; Bob Whit-
tiker at 115; Larry Creswell at
140; Steve» Geiger at 145; and
Rich Helm at 190.
The > first pre-season meet for
the freshmen will be held to
morrow against Marshall and
Gresham beginning at 11:00 in
the gym. The first PIL meet will
be December 16 when the grap-
plers meet Jackson.

The average height of the five
starters is 6’2” with their tallest
member being Mike James at
6’6”. The tallest member for the
Generals is Bill Flowers at 6’6”.
“We feel that Grant has a real
good ball club and at this time
it is anybody’s ball game,” con
cluded Coach Long.
On the freshman level the
team is preparing for their game
with Jackson on December 16.
“The team is bigger than they
have been in the last four years
and we should be good,” stated
Frosh coach Thomas Piennett.
“It would be too hard to pick
out any outstanding individuals
at this time,” he concluded.

Tonight and tomorrow mark
the opening of the basketball
and wrestling seasons. Many of
the students in the school will
go to see the basketball game
tonight, but, because it is not as
popular, few will go to the
wrestling tournament tomorrow.
The wrestling team is hosting
Marshall, Gresham and Y-East
tomorrow in the first pre-season
tournament ever to be held at
Grant.
Although it is not the most
popular sport it is perhaps the
roughest. Wrestling takes more
stamina than any other high
school sport. It is also one of the
most exciting sports when the
score gets close,
