The students learn to measure, find area, make layout plans, design, construct and use different materials. Some of these materials are hardwoods, plywoods, softwoods, plastics, glues and finishes. Demonstrations and pro cedures in operating each of the eleven power ma chines in the shop are given the students. Hand tools are demonstrated and safety is stressed when operating any tool. Some of the objectives of this course are to learn new skills and develop new techniques and ideas. “The girls’ as well as the DICK CARVER'S Majestic Drive In Cleaners boys’ classes are making some very fine projects,” stated Louis Schilke, wood working instructor. Some of these projects are jewelry boxes, candle holders, hope chests, tables lamps, night stands, book cases and plastic tables. “I am very proud of each stu dent’s work and I know the stu dent is proud of his own work,” added Mr. Schilke. Mr. Schilke teaches six classes of woodworking. Seniors Donn Markwardt and Larry Leas help as teachers’ aids in two of his classes. “The classes and each indi vidual are to be commended for. their cooperation in keeping a safe shop and also for their re spect for each other and assum ing the responsibility that should be maintained throughout life,” stated Mr. Schilke. by Julie Ferry Would you like to buy a Proc? Although you may not know it, a Proc may be just what you’re looking for. Proc, which stands for painted rock, is the name of a company formed by seniors Leslie Frey and Patty Polen. Following the rage of painting rocks last spring, the girls decid ed to start their business after Leslie gave Patty a banana rock for her birthday. “Patty really thought the rock was neat, so that’s how Proc came about,” com mented Leslie. This summer Leslie and Patty started selling their rocks. The rocks were sold at a psychedelic shop, making approximately $30 for the girls. “We hope to sell them through department stores this year,” commented Leslie. There aren’t any special shapes or sizes of rocks used. Sometimes you can match designs with shapes of rocks, such as using a somewhat square rock and making it into a die. Leslie and Patty have come up with about 82 different de signs and are always interested in new ones. The painted rocks range in price from 25 cents to $5. The price of the rocks depends on the size of the rock, the difficul ty of the design and length of time used in making them. The rocks can be used as pa perweights, worry rocks or con versation pieces. “If anyone wants a painted rock we’ll sell them from our samples, or make any design you want us to,” added Patty. “We hope to keep making and selling painted rocks till next summer, however Proc probably won’t continue as a business,” Leslie added. The plan is to get the dads to take an active part in helping teachers or advisers in classes to carry out this year’s activities. Four areas which could use parental help are the instrumen tal, choral, forensics, and drama departments. The parents would help by being judges, chaper ones, supervisors and by provid ing transportation for the stu- dents. According to Gust Kanas, vice-principal of curriculum, ““The parents would be actively involved in special activities. There would be direct help in particular activities and it would help classes and the school as a whole.” “We sincerely hope that it will give the areas of special in terest a boost of participation and give the dads a boost to see what the students are accom plishing,” stated Dr. Clinton Brown, Dad’s club president. proc LESLIE FREY AND PATTY POLEN, who paint rocks for a profit, are arranging their display in a showcase. The girls have about 82 different designs and are always interested in new designs. Make-up day scheduled for appointment failures According to Willard Mohn, Memoirs adviser, approximately 50 seniors have not had their pictures taken because they have failed to keep their appoint ments. The only day scheduled for pictures to be taken of students who have failed to have theirs taken, for students who would like retakes and for some fac ulty members will be October 31, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Any student who doesn’t show up at that time will not be pic tured in the yearbook. Because the yearbook is the most complete record of the year it is urged that all students who have failed to complete appoint ments to date will do so. Underclass pictures have all been taken. On December 4 those students whose pictures for some reason did not turn out will be rescheduled and retaken on that day. Any students wanting to order packets at $2.00 each may do so by having their pictures taken over during lunch periods. All seniors are asked to return their proofs no later than Octo ber 31.
