4 THE GRANTONIAN December 9, 1966 Generals play Washington tonight by George Dukart Washington and Lincoln, both with at least three returning starters from last year, are fa vored to battle it out for the season’s basketball title. “Third to fifth place teams should be made up of tall Wilson, quick Jeff and al ways tough Grant,” said Coach Ed Rooney. Rooney said, “Grant will prob ably start five juniors and use a second platoon made up of sen iors.” Steve Turner, Steve Daggett and Marv Armstrong will start as post men, guards will be Scott Terrall, Harry Whitney and Leo Franz. The senior platoon will be made up of Duane Brant ley, Jim Houghton, guards Bob Ewen, Steve Weckert, Jeff Severide, or Marty Marks and possibly Ray Brooks. Others present for varsity positions are jun iors George Yerkovich and Ronnie Young, also sopho more Bill Flowers. AT 2-2574 Varsity wrestlers practice daily for first match against Benson Last Friday, the grapplers lost their first pre-season match with Beaverton. The Generals were defeated 34-18, winning only 4 matches and 1 draw. The varsity wrestling squad under coaches Robert Shewbert and Lanny Sparks are practic ing heavily each day for the first PIL meet against Benson Tech. Coach Shewbert stated that this year’s team is inexperienced because of the loss of so many of last year’s wrestlers. The four winning men were Wayne Crawford, 123 pounds; Charles Kerns, 136 pounds; last year’s undefeated city champion, Gene Brown, 179 pounds and heavyweight Cliff Rose. Grant has accumulated a commanding lead in over all wins with a 108 win, no tie, and 37 loss record. The Generals lost one and won one game last year to the Colo nials. The defeat over Washing ton earned Grant the right to a playoff game with Lincoln. This year the Colonials return with the speed of brothers Willie and Charlie Stoudamire, Don Matthews and Jackie Smith. Height is one of the factors that will hurt Washington, so the boards will have to be left up to Bob Lundahl and Charles Hunt. James Tims, Donald Shepard, Gary Ladd and Charles Shepard will be on the starting lineup for Jefferson’s fast-moving team. 6’4” Mike Bubalo, Jeff Kol- berg and Greg Slavens, back from last year’s State Tourna ment team, are only a few of Lincoln’s starters. Lincoln rated first in the Oregon Journal has plenty of height, ability and speed to take them to the finals again. Grant defeated Lincoln last year. Six teams, the first, sec ond, third, fourth, sixth, and seventh periods, entered compe tition and the winning team was fourth period. Members of period four are Maxianne McNeil, Captain Lauri Hunner, Chris Robison, Becky Tally, Colleen Klein, Sheron Jor don, Michelle Cape, Myrtle War ren, and. Michelle Lafromboise. Teams for Park league bas ketball are beginning to prac tice in the old gym, with compe tition starting on January 23. According to Miss Egbers,-three teams will enter. Park league volleyball is now in progress with two sophomore teams and one junior and senior team. Each sophomore team has four wins and two losses, junior and senior team has one win and fiye losses.
