Varsity cross country runners
take fourth in Willamette meet

Although the Generals’ hopes
of a state cross-country title
failed to materialize last Satur
day at Willamette, the Generals
did accomplish something they
hadn’t been able to do all sea
son; and Corvallis high school
took the title for the second year
in a row.
In finishing fourth, the spik-
ers avenged two earlier season
losses to city champion Marshall
high school, as the Generals
scored 221 points to fifth-place
Marshall’s 231 points, beating
them for the first timé this sea
son. In sixth place was another
PIL team, Cleveland high school,
with 242 points.
Corvallis, whose first man fin
ished in eighth place, breezed to
victory with 104 points. Marsh

second with 178 points. North
Eugene was third with 198
points.*
Junior Bruce McCormmach
led the General contingent of
runners as he finished twenty
fourth. Other finishers for Coach
Mark Cotton’s team were Kevin
Monson, twenty-eighth; Kirk
Breese, thirty-second; Charles
Kinsey, sixty-seventh; Bruce
Bromley, seventieth; Ardy Ison,
ninety-fourth, and Bill Francis,
one hundred-twentieth.

the title, broke the old record of
12:31.6 over the 2.5-mile course
set by General Ron Byers in
1964.
McNeale was timed in 12:28.8
as he barely overcame Benson’s
sophomore Mike Hahn, who also
eclipsed the old record in finish
ing about a yard behind the

son with a 14-3 mark.
Swimming team
faces city meet
■Seven swimmers will compete
in the PIL swimming champion
ships at Multnomah Athletic club
today at 4 p.m.
Seniors Bob Foster and Bruce
Rector are entered in the 50-
yard freestyle; Mark Powell in
the 100-yard butterfly; Jeff Pitt
man in the 100-yard backstroke
and Bob Philips in the 100-yard
breaststroke.
An added entry will be fresh
man Bruce Parker in the diving
event. Diving isn’t a featured
event in the regular season meets
because of a lack of facilities.
However it is a part of the regu
lar city and state meets.
The first two finishers in to
day’s meet will earn a berth to
the state meet to be held at Eu
gene next week.
Grant stopped Benson 55-40
last week in their last meet of
the season. The tankers now own
a 9-1 record, their only loss being
to Wilson.
In the meet held at Buckman,
Coach Carl Rubin cited Bob,
Bruce, Bob, Mark, Jeff and Bob
Messerschmidt as all turning in
good performances.
Girls’ fall sports
proceed to enter
final competitions
As the fall athletic season
draws to a close, girls’ sports
teams are entering final compe-
titions.
“Last year we came in
fourth but this year I think
we have a chance for third,”
commented Mrs. Rosellen
Sweet, varsity girls’ swim
team coach, when speaking
of the team’s chances in the
upcoming state meet.
After defeating Girls Poly
technic, 77-23, the girls will
compete in the city swim meet
today. The meet is sponsored by
the Multnomah Athletic club.
The state meet is set for Novem
ber 19.
Named as outstanding
members of the team by
Mrs. Sweet were team cap
tain Carol Thoma, senior;
Patty Jensen, sophomore,
and Ann Sidell, freshman.
“I expect a lot from Ann and
Patty,” said Mrs. Sweet. “They
should earn extra points in the
city and state meets.
In girls’ volleyball competi
tion, two sophomore teams have
taken first place with a senior
girls’ team holding third.
Captained by Cheryl Doane,
the team of Pegge MacNamara,
Betty Woodward, Carolyn Car
roll, Ann Bellerby and Liz Kal
len has won 5 games and lost T.
Other team members- are Bar
bara Leonard, Patty Jensen,
Shelly Taylor and Myrna West.
Susan Pendergrass headed a
team with Alice Bailey, Jan Kel
ly, Gretchen Guthrie, Barb Kane,
Karen Zidell and Nancy Leedom.
This team also won 5 games and
lost 1.
In girls’ intramural tennis,
sophomore Betty Woodward de
feated sophomore Pegge Mac
Namara, 11-9, in the intramural
finals.

Generals tie for city championship;
Lincoln goes to state quarterfinal
Reigning as city league co
champions, the Generals ended
the football season by whipping
Wilson, 46-19, as Onia Bates
dashed for 5 touchdowns.
Even so, the Lincoln Car
dinals will travel to the state
quarter-final via their win over
the Generals.
The Cards earned their first
playoff berth in ID years by
downing Roosevelt, 27-14, and
will now face highly rated Hills
boro in their quest for a state
championship.
Only Lincoln, Jefferson, Wash
ington, and Madison finished the
same or higher than predicted in
the pre-season polls.
