Generals topple Cleveland; vault into league lead
by Mike Hoffman
Shredding the Cleveland defense for a 48-19 victory last week,
the Generals bolted into first place as powerful Lincoln drubbed
Washington, 24-12, to oust the Colonials from the league’s top spot.
Winless Roosevelt will host the Generals at 8 tonight, and being
home team appears to be the only advantage the Teddies can claim.
Fine backs June Germany and Junior Hewitt carry the power
load for Roosevelt, and from there depth is a major problem.
Fullback Steve Grimsrud and guards Dennis Purcell and Dale
Wochnick are more than adequate, but a small bench and lack of
experience hurts the Teddies.
In its last outing, Roosevelt was dumped by Rex Putnam of the
Metro league, 27-13. Putnam is winless in 3 Metro starts.
Cleveland drew first blood on a 66-yard gallop by Robb Scounce,
but from that point it was the Generals’ game.
Onia Bates and Bob Ewen sliced through and around the sup
posedly strong Indian defense and Bates put the game away with 3
third quarter scores.

ONIA BATES, number 20, eludes Cleveland's Roger Smith en route to a touchdown last Friday at
Madison. Bates romped 40, 48, and 54 yards for scores as the Generals downed Cleveland, 48-19.
Swimming squad
to meet Colonials,
Solons in races
After, winning 2 meets last
week, the varsity swim squad
will face Washington at Buck
man Monday, then clash with
Madison at Couch on Thursday.
Coach Carl Rubin doesn’t ex
pect the Colonials to be over
powering, but Madison could be
another story. “If they have the
use of the Town and Country
club pool they could be very
tough,” he said.
In their first meet, the Generals
trounced Marshall, 74-20, and
came back the next day to whip
Jackson, 90-16.
In the Jackson encounter, the
team took first place in 11 events,
second in 7 events and 2 thirds.
Besides receiving ample
strength from his veterans,
Coach Rubin got added support
from his crop of freshmen. First-
year men Jeff Pitman and Mark
Powell contributed heavily to the
Generals’ point total.
Pitman won the 400-yard
backstroke, the 80-yard indi
vidual medley and was on the
winning relay team.
Cross country members host
league opponents Wednesday
Going after its third win, the
varsity cross country team will
play host to Jefferson, Lincoln,
and Franklin next Wednesday at
4 p.m.
“This won’t be a particularly
tough meet, although each team
has one or two real good run
ners,” stated Coach Mark Cotton.
Jefferson, which entered a
team consisting of 3 runners in
their last meet with Grant, has
been bolstered by the return of
senior Dan Baker, who led the
Demos last year.
