Poem
for the
holidays
From letters to Santa to New
Year’s resolutions, December has
always been a time for putting pen
to paper. And Manzanita’s Hoffman
Center for
the Arts is
encouraging
wordsmiths to
do just that in
preparation for a
poetry contest in
January 2020.
Budding poets
are invited to
submit poems
of 30 lines or
Lana Hechtman
less, on any
Ayers
subject. Up to
three poems will
be accepted in a single submission
document. Each submitter must
state a clear connection to the North
Oregon Coast in the biographical
statement that accompanies the
submission.
The winning poem will be
published on the Hoffman Center
website and in the center’s newsletter
as well as winning its author a $100
cash prize.
All submissions will be
anonymously judged by Lana Ayers,
MFA, who has been publishing the
Concrete Wolf Poetry Chapbook
Series since 2001. In 2010, she
created MoonPath Press to publish
poetry collections by Pacific
Northwest poets. She has authored
nine collections of poetry and recently
released her first novel.
Submissions will be accepted from
January 1 to January 31, and the
contest is limited to the first 50 poets
who enter. The winner will be notified
in March.
There is a $7 entry fee to enter
the contest. All submissions must be
made online at hoffmanarts.org.

There’s Lutz to admire about this show
Newport’s Pothole Players will present
the perfect old-fashioned treat for the
Holiday season this Saturday, Dec. 21, with
the Oregon premiere of “The Lutz Radio
Theatre Christmas Show (of 1947).”
It’s Christmas Eve 1947 and the final
radio broadcast for station KMAS in
Hollywood, California. After this, they’ll
be converted to a television studio; and not
everyone’s happy about it. When the writer
throws a fit and the professional actors and
musicians don’t arrive, the station workers
must scramble to save the broadcast — after
all, the show must go on.
Based on a play by Alex Golson and the
Orange Coast College Repertory Theatre,
the show is directed by Cody Larsen and
stars Nikki Atkins, Jami Ivory, Jim Erickson,
William Derek Webster and Joshua
