Intricate fabric
masterpieces from three artists
will be on show at the Oregon
Coast this weekend as the
Yachats Commons hosts the
Art Quilt Trifecta.
The Trifecta offers
viewers an up-close look at
the relatively new medium
of art quilting, which has
seen quilters move from
the kitchen to the studio,
increasing the use of non-
traditional materials and
imbuing their work with
personally meaningful subject
matter.
The show will include
pieces by Ginny McVickar,
who began to focus on textile
art after retirement and now
has her work showing in four
countries. Currently residing
in Oregon, McVickar has
had solo shows as well as
designing and coordinating
two international textile art
shows.
Joining her is Joanne
Baeth, a retired school teacher
who became inspired by
wildlife and nature and started
taking photographs and
drawing birds, animals and
landscapes. During this same
time, she had the opportunity
to see several art quilt shows
and decided to combine her
love of the outdoors, drawing,
photography and quilting.
Her goal is to create art quilts
that resemble oil or watercolor
paintings. Since 2006, she has
won more than 100 awards
at national and international
quilt shows.
Laura Fogg is a textile
artist and focuses on collage
landscapes, large fabric pieces
that are sewn together like
quilts but are intended to be
hung on walls. Made with a
wide variety of shiny, metallic
and fragile fabrics, they are
frequently embellished with
beads, buttons and yarns to
create a playful appearance.
Fogg’s work has been shown
both locally and nationally.
Two pieces are currently
in nationwide traveling
shows having won ribbons
in national competitions.
Her work has also been
published in several books
and magazines.
The Trifecta, organized
by Polly Plumb Productions,
runs from 10 am to 4 pm on
Saturday and Sunday, Nov.
23 and 24, at the Yachats
Commons, 441 Hwy. 101 N.
Admission is by suggested
donation of $5.
