REAL Oregon recruiting for fall class
SALEM — The Resource Education and Agricultural Leadership Program (REAL Oregon) recently
announced the successful completion of Class 3 and has started recruiting for Class 4, which will start
in November, with contingencies in place for social distancing
“REAL Oregon is a collaboration of industry and other groups throughout the state that have
recognized the importance of developing and grooming natural resource leaders now and in the future,”
according to a press release. “In addition to one-of-a-kind networking opportunities and learning more
about the state, the program will bring current and future leaders together from agriculture, fishing, and
forestry sectors in a series of five statewide sessions starting this fall.”
To adjust for the covid-19 situation, some changes have been made to the schedule and policies
related to Class 4. REAL Oregon board member and curriculum chair Lauren Lucht said these changes
will not take away from the programming or this distinctive opportunity. The application deadline is
July 24 and interested candidates should visit the REAL Oregon website (www.realoregon.net) for
more information.
REAL Oregon Executive Director Greg Addington said the program’s directors will continually
monitor the situation and will follow government health guidelines.
Class 4 will include up to 25 participants, who will be responsible for their own lodging costs. Tuition
will be $2,000 (assistance may be available).
Pacific, Wahkiakum rated good places to retire
LONG BEACH — Pacific and Wahkiakum counties are ranked among the places in Washington
state where a Social Security pension goes the farthest in meeting living expenses, according to the sixth
annual study of the topic by SmartAsset, a financial services firm.
Wahkiakum was rated first among the state’s 39 counties and Pacific was fourth.
With an estimated cost of living of $18,222 and an average Social Security payment of $23,644,
SmartAsset gave Wahkiakum an index score of 98.39, just under the maximum score of 100.
Pacific County’s average cost of living was computed to be $19,257 and its average Social Security
payment as $20,812 — yielding an index score of 82.53.
Peninsula medical facilities resume most services
ILWACO — Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics (OBHMC) announced June 2 the resumption
of 80% of regular healthcare services at Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics. The announcement
was made by Larry Cohen, chief executive officer.
General surgeries and elective procedures have commenced on a case-by-case basis. Dr. Gerald
Weaver and his staff can be reached at 360-642-3747 to discuss options.
The Ilwaco and Ocean Park clinics are ramping up to see more in-office patients. In-office visits with
a provider will look different as a system has been put in place to optimize patient safety. Expect social
distance practices in the lobby and a list of instructions to follow for the safety of all. Unless a patient
is a minor or needs assistance, the clinics request the patient arrive alone. Call 360-642-3747 for details
and to make an appointment.
Tele-video visits many have relied on over the past two months will continue to be available.
All other departments and service lines are operational. This includes provider-referred diagnostic
imaging tests — CT, MRI, X-ray, nuclear medicine or ultrasound — as well as routine laboratory tests.
OBHMC has resumed scheduling mammogram screenings on the new Hologic 3D machine as well
as DEXA bone density screenings. To schedule, call 360-642-6325.
OBHMC’s Physical Therapy department and Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation services are also
open. Both have designed systems to provide hands-on care that is safe for patients and staff.
Pulmonary function testing and cardiac ultrasound services are closed until further notice. Orthopedic
surgeries have been canceled indefinitely. The Naselle Clinic also remains closed. Patients requiring
medication refills or who need to speak with a provider can call 360-642-6457 for assistance.

GHC offering online business bachelor’s degree
ABERDEEN — Grays Harbor College is offering the Bachelors of Applied Science in Organizational
Management (BAS-OM) program for the 2020-21 academic year. With uncertainties around covid-19,
college staff are aiming for minimal interruptions for the program and will offer courses online.
Dr. Lucas Rucks, dean of workforce education said, “The safety of our students is important and this
is one program that we can move fully online.”
Rucks added, “We have been discussing this option, I really want to make this program more accessible
to Pacific County and outlying parts of the Harbor through different delivery formats. Covid-19 has
forced the issue. This next cohort will be able to complete their two-year bachelor degree completely
online. And then we may alternate, moving between in-person, hybrid, and all-online options. We’ll
have to wait and see, based on community needs.”
GHC has extended the application deadline for the BAS-OM program to June 30. Applications may
be submitted online at https://forms.ghc.edu/bas-application. Online classes will take place on Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 5 p.m. The BAS-OM program is designed for working adults.
This pathway is for students looking to advance their careers in respective fields, especially those
graduates with an applied associate degree.

GEARHART — Trail’s End Art Center and Gallery is celebrating its 70th Anniversary this year
and while the doors to the former schoolhouse have been closed, due to the pandemic, its Online
Marketplace is open to the public and features a variety of art pieces by Trail’s End members.
Similar to Facebook or Craig’s List, Trail’s End members submit original art pieces or prints they
want to sell. Potential buyers can browse the site and interact with the artist directly to ask questions
and/or complete the sale.
To access the Online Marketplace, go to the Trail’s End website — trailsendart.org. A link there
provides access to the online body of work. Both the Trail’s End website and the online store were
created by Carol Braden and Kitty Paino.
Trail’s End Art Center’s building, a historic schoolhouse, located at 656 ‘A’ Street in Gearhart, has
been shown in photographs as early as 1908 and was probably built in 1903. Today it is a non-profit, all
volunteer run, cooperative of artists. It has served artists on the north coast since 1950.
