A few days ago we wort* interested in the s ta te m e n t o f one close to one o' our higher edu cational institutions to the e f f e c t t h a t the larger proportion o f those who a tte n d get almost no per m»neut benefit from the four y e ar* spelit in g c t t i u g their degree*. His ex plauatiou was that this large pro|»ir tlou a tt c u d the institution largely for the social fe atu re s and picked, from the large uumber of studies o f ft-red, those which seemed the easiest way to a diploma. Accord in g to this m a n 's belief, the colleges of the country ell courage this happy go lucky form o f education by the unlimited courses o f fered, while the ta x p a y e r foots the bill fo r a four y e a r s ’ course i:i putting ou social polish. The ¡Sentinel, a lw ays a supporter o f higher education, re grets that t h e n 1 is ground for this accu sation, and we are not going to lay all the blame onto the students who think more o f four ye ars o f social pleasure than ol put ting som ething inside their heads that inav some day prove o f inestimable value to them. P nre uts are more lenicut with their children than were parents o f 25 ye ars ago. All o f us who have reached m atu rity will admit that Children are perm itted social pleasures never dreamed o f by most o f those who are now parent* o f these children. I t i* equally true that |>areuts o f to day have pleasure* amt e njo ym ents that jmrents of 25 years ago did not have, but one o f those added pleasures is uot added f ilia l devotion o f children, is uot added thoughtfuln ess o f eh drea. Such (mreiits do uot wish their childreu to live under the same roudi tious and go through the same things that the { « r e n t s went through, which is a worthy wish on the part o f the pareuls, even though they nmv wish that young fo lk s did not demand S O much, even though they may wish that children could realize how much they have to be th a n k f u l for. A f t e r giviug consideration to this change in the life o f the younger g e n eratio n, a f t e r considering what o fte n are the unreasonable demands o f grow ing adolescent youth, a f t e r considering how adolescent youth is wastin g the best y e a r s o f life, it is refreshing to read o f thos«- less f o rtu n ate than the g r e a te r number o f the young people o f \ o matter what your eye defect is, our glasses will aid you best. rl * 4. ir t. ^ -> p aaiWIll AMETIE ST EUGENE OSE. it e s x & L * . today but who seem to be ta k in g g re ate r ad van tage o f the gr e a te r up p o rtim i!ic* o ffe re d by the educational institution*.
