why it no longer curries any water

HUCKELBERRIES DEVELOP
UNUSUAL 0IRTH
THI8 YEAR
A huckleberry two inches in cir
cumference is unusual even in the
Cottage Grove country, where fruit
(s-rforms many strange stunts, but
such a berry, with xueh an un
usual girth, was among many large
ones brought down recently from
the Koheuna mining district, the
famous huckleberry section, by Mr.
and Mrs. James W. Hear*.
The berries o f that section have
all been o f unusuul nze this year.
Ordinarly o f about the six« o f tdne-
berncs, this year they have bee»
more the size o f smuli cherries. Mr.
and Mrs. Hears picked 15 gallon*
during the eight days they were
there on Mr. Scars’ mining prop
erty. They have picked a total o f
9H gallons
during
the
m-anon.
Thousands of gallons have come
out o f tho district during the
season and this particular berry
is considered by many epicures as
the peer o f the muny delicious
berries that grow with almost no

The bridge is well aloug toward com

work there for ten days or two weeks
yet.
It is impossible to haul lumber over
the road from Florence to Big creek
on account o f the deep sand and the
only means o f transporting the ma
terial fo r the bridge was to raft it
and trust to the tide to land it ou the
beach. There is no place for boats
to land ill that locality anil the little
tow boat stopped 3(8) or 406 feet out
from shore, the men cat the raft loose
and the lumber floated toward the
beach.
