The importance o f using Cottage Grove and Oregon produets was de. pl impressed on nearly two hundred people o f the community at a “ H om e Products*’ dinner at Moose hail Wed uesday evening, given under the alls pices o f the Cottage Grove chamber o f commerce. E v ery item on the splcudid menu was produced in Ore gon and many o f the delicacies were grown or manufactured in our own ■ oiu in unity. Tbe dinner was serve.i most e ffic ie n tly by the women o f the Methodist church and nearly ~»ii guests occupied seats at the four tables wbieh extended the full length o f the halL President Kem called the meet,, to order and fo llow in g the singin g <■ “ America. ’ ’ Kev. Himpson ilarnri. k o ff e r e d the invocation, f o l l o w i n g the dinner Mr. Kem introduced Secretary E. W. Miller as toastmaster, who con du cted the program with his u- eluoucnce and aplomb. Mayor Knowb- spoke interestingly o f the Cottage Grove cannery, o f which he is pres ; idea« and manager. O. M. Kem read tw o much appreciated poems wbieh dealt with thu magnanim ity o f the i man who makes the weather f o r the * Cottage Grove country. Mrs. L. A. ; Unmpfirey, o f Portland, who is dem on- ' strating Oregon products at tb>- ¡Smith tfl.ort grocery, appealed to the women o f tho community to look for the labels on everyth in g they buy and giv e those with Oregon brands the preference. Man C. Freeman, o f P o r t land, president o f the Associated In dustries o f Oregon, au organization whose purpose is to boost Oregon and local industry, o f f e r e d the prim-ipai address o f the evenin g and presented a convin cin g array of ev idence to prove that l he prosperity o f Oregon depends largely upon a liberal pur ronage o f tbe manufacturing establish ments within the borders o f the stale, and presented M ayor Knowles with uu Oregon made necktie, thereby embic w aticaily hitching Cottage Grove, through its o f f ic ia l representative, to thu ideals f o r which his organization stands. Mrs. Leon D .s ljirz e s , Mrs. E. \V Armes, Mrs. George Matthews anil Miss Elsie I j .- u sang a quartet anu responded to a hearty encore and Mrs. James England saiig a solo, Miss Ada Matthews played their aceompnui ineuts. BONDS MUST BE ISSUED IF COUNTY ROAD WORK GOES ON County Judge C. P. Barnard discus sing the matter o f taxes aud road bonds, declares that in order to se cure the co-operation of the state highway commission in road w ork iu this county it will be necessary to is sue a lot more o f the $2,000.000 bond issue next year. The amount o f road money available from county taxes next year will be considerably less than this year, said the judge, o w in g to the increased state tax that the county will be compelled to pay. As an example o f the great increase in -th e state tax which the coun ty is compelled to puy, the* ju dg e quoted figures as follows. The c o u n t y ’s 1H20 share o f the state tax was $176,0;»ii and that in 1021 was $574,045.10, or over double that o f the previous year. The 1922 tax will also be a great deal more than that o f this year but inas much as the county is limited by hive as to tho amount it shall raise b y t a x atio n each year, a large sum o f tax money that would otho'-wise be e x tended upou roads next year will ne cessarily have to go to the state. Thus in order to keep up the good roa is program so well started in this com it y and to obtain assistance from the state, highway commission it will lie abso lutely necessary to issue a lot o f bonds, says the judge. Judge Barnard has noticed a story in a Portland newspaper to the e f f e c t that in Multnomah coun ty the cost o f caring f o r the pour is now much greater than it was last year but in hiking ov e r the expenditures in lame county f o r this purpose, he notes that there has been little or no increase. In 1920 Lane county expended f o r the camp o f the poor, including the main tenance o f the poor farm, the sum o f $12,JS1.91 aud f o r w id o w s ’ pensions $11.000. So far during the fir st hair o f 1921 the expenditures f o r the poor have been but $0101.64 and those f o r w i d o w s ' pensions $5006.50. How'ev. i said the ju dge, it is expected that the figures for the last half o f the y e a r will be som ewhat larger as they usu ally prove to be. Ralph D amew ood H as Narrow Escape. Henry D am ew ood has receiv ed w ord o f the narrow escape from death o f his sou Ralph, who is employed in the oil field s at Osage, YVyo. They were boiling crude o il am! workin g out gasoline. Hay in this section has been a splendid yield this year and most o f the first crop has been cut and put away.
