What is lubrication? What «loos it mean when a mechanic
tells you that your car i* not lubricated properly? Why in a
lubricating oil so named? The answer to these questions may
he obvious to the majority of motorists and yet the full *ig-
niiicancc of the value of proper lubrication has never been
impMss«d upon them, with disastrous results to their cars.
Oil Is K< inedy It is a well-known fact that friction is the
worst enemy lh< r< is to moving metal. When two pieces of metal, or any
other solid substance, rub against each other, there is produced that irri

tatio n th at ha» w ine to be known by the physical name of friction. Oil i* it» chief
rem edy. The spring man will tel) a mntnri»t th at it ¡» not the best m ethod of taking
care o f hi» spring». ninre rem oving the friction from betw een th e spring leaves is one
way of redueing their efficiency and shortening their life. B ut th a t p art o f the car
i- the only part th a t doe« b etter w ithout oH, and plenty of it; w ith the exception, of
course, of the brake drum« and linings.
The principle of lubrication i» to prevent any two piece* of m etal, th at are
w orking one against the other, from touching. This is accom plished by having a film
of oil between these tw o metals. Upon this film of oil depends the life o f bearings,
cylinders and piston rings. Only three differen t grades of lubricants are used. The
ow ner should provide himself w ith a supply of gas cylinder oil, grease and steam
engine oil.
I sc I’ure Oil— N ever use steam engine oil or anything but n pure m ineral oil in
the engine. Fast running or riding over heavy and hilly roads nses up oil much
faster fhnn eity driving, l'u t in an extra pint of oil every hundred miles or so. This
precaution will avoid trouble with hearings or cylinders.
Once :i month, or every thousand miles, th e oil in the erank case should be
drained o ff and a fresh supply poured in. The oil may lie drained by rem oving the
drain plug at t?:« button of the oil pan. A fter draining, flush the crank case with
kerosene through the breather pipe, replace drain plug and put in clean oil to the
level of tin lower pit cock in the crank case. T ura the engine over for five to ten
m inutes, it move drain plug anil drain again. Then refill w ith new oil. ‘
H alf filling the case is to m ake absolutely sure th a t ail the kerosene is drained
off. for otherw ise it would mix with the fresh oil and cut down its lubricating
qualities.
H on’t w ait until you hear a “ squeak” before oiling. A “ sq u ea k ” mean* a
rusty or dry bearing, and when once in th at condition trouble goon follow*.
The com pact construction of some car* m akes necessary th e placing of oil holes
and grease cups under the floor boards of the ear. D on’t, because it m ight cause
you a little extra trouble, forget to remove them and lubricate as directed.
