NORTH POLE FEAST Starving Men of Kane’s Arctic Expedition Dined on Seal. Members of Party Trembling With Anxiety When True Aim of Rifle man Ended the Crisis. Koine one hns estimated thut In the century-long effort to retich the North pule 400 live* and Zisi ship* were lost < »ne o f the earlier expedition* was Hie one led by Itoctnr Kune In ISAS, consisting o f 1!» men. The account of their hardship* h * told In "T h e Siege and ( 'onqueat nt (be North Pole," by George Hryce, Is almost Incredible, re late* the Youth's Companion. Scurvy and the hitter cold made the sunless arctic winter o f 140 days a continuous and horrible nlghtmure. Their b;Mg. Advance, was frozen Into the great lee pack, which even the re turning sun o f summer could not loos en. With scanty supplies they were compelled to spend u second dreary winter In the arctic, during which several o f the party succumbed to slcktiess and exposure. In June, when their provision* were virtually gone, a narrow channel opened, and the survivors, manning two small boats, fought their way southward. Starvation quickly weakened their e f fort*. but at that desperate crisis they sighted food— a seal. Doctor Kane thus describes the Incident: "It was nn ursuk, and so large that f at first mistook It for a w a lr u '. Trembling with anxiety, we prepared to crawl down upon It. W e stationed Peterson, with the large English rifle. In the bow. and drew stockings over the oars as muffler*. A* we neared the animal, our excitement became so Intense that the men could hardly keep stroke. I hud a set o f signals for such occasion« that spared us the use of the voice; and when we were about "><*> yards off. the oars were taken In and vve moved in deep silence with a single scull astern. "T h e seal was asleep, for It reared Its head when we were almost with in rifle snot, and to this day I can remember the hard, careworn, almost despairing expression o f the men’s thin faces as they saw It move; their live* depended on Its capture. “ I depressed m.v hand nervously as a signal for Peterson to fire. The bout, noiselessly sagging ahead, seemed to me within certuiu range. Looking at Peterson. I saw that the jssir fellow was paralyzed by hi* a n x ie ty : he was trying vainly to obtain a rest for his gun against the cutwater o f the bout. The seal rose on Its fore flippers, gaz ing at us for a moment with fright ened curiosity, and colled Itself for a plunge. At that instant, simultane ously with the crack o f the rifle It re laxed its length on the ice. and at the very brink o f the water fell help less to one side. "W ith n wild yell the men urged both boats upon the floes. A crowd of hands seized the seal and bore it up to safer lee. The men seemed half crazy. I hnd not realized how much we were reduced by absolute famine. They ran over the floe crying and laughing and brandishing tlu-ir knives. It was not five minutes before every man was sucking his bloody fingers or mouthing long strips o f raw blub ber. ""“ Not- an unce o f the seal was lost. The Intestines found their way Into the soup kettles; the cartilaginous parts o f the fore flippers were cut off and passed around to he chewed upon; and even the liver, warm and raw as it was. bade fair to he eaten before it had seen the jtot. That night, on the large halting-floe, to which, in con tempt o f the dangers o f drifting, we happy men had hauled our boats, two entire planks were devoted to a grand cooking fire, and we enjoyed a rare aud savage feast." In a recent number o f the Bookman William Lyon Phelps thus sets forth the advantage a work o f art possesses over a scientlfle hook ; “ A great work of art Is never old-fashioned ; because it expresses in final form some truth about human nature, and human na ture never changes— In comparison with its primal elements, the moun tains are ephemeral. A drama dealing with the Impalpable huniun soul Is more likely to stay true than a treatise on geology. Tills is the notable ad vantage works o f art have over works o f science, the advantage o f being and remaining true. No matter how Im portant the contribution o f scientific books, they are alloyed with inevitable error, and after the death o f their au thors must he constantly revised by lesser men.
