C H IL D IS H P R A N K CLOGS W A T E R SYSTEM. • C I T Y 'S ____ The l.ayng creek water supply, which had been troubling for several weeks, is again furnishing about twice as much wafer as the city can use. Water Com missioner Pitcher found that a piece o f iron pipe had been dropped into an air vent near the source, probably by some children, and that sticks and leaves had gathered against the pipe and pretty ef t'eetunlly clogged the flow. The water main had to be dug up front nine feet under ground and the refuse removed. But for the faet that Cottage Grovi has tw o water systems this prank by the children would have seriously en dangered the city in case o f fire. Joseph Knotts Delivers an Address Befitting Its Added Importance Climaxes Reached In Explaining Wrong and Right o f War and Denounc ing Slackers and Parasites of Society. Memorial day was fit tin gly observed here, being given an added solemnity by reason ot the great import of the news from our fig htin g bOys on the front iu France. The stirring address oy Kcv. Joseph Knotts was intersperse^ with refereaces to things taking place on the western front, where Heroes are being made who will be honored in Memorial days o f the future. Rev. Knotts prefaced his address with the remark that in this memorial service we were gathered together to observe it as we nad never betore in our history on similar occasions. He first spoke on th*- purpo-e o f memorials, emphasising their power lo resurrect the ideals, prin ciples or deeds. He referred to the memorials inscnbisi in the cold slabs o f maible or the pages o f history, but said the best inscription was that made on the hearts ot men. Such inscription became a living, contagious, inspiring, ennobling influence. Rev. Knotts showed the baud and pur pose o f God in the discovery, settlement and wars o f America, aud o f our appre ciation and gratitude now for the lib erties and Chnstiau civilization banded down to us by the sacrificial and he roic deeds ot our veterans and their fathers, the same spirit o f sa crifice and service being today exercised on even a broader, grander scale by our boys lu France. The climax o f his address was reached in his discussion on the wrung and the right o f war. He showed how not all wars are wrong; that there are circumstances Miat require the use o f force; and that failure to use force at such times is not only unpatriotic but unchristian. " ' T o deny the justice and righteousness ut war under existing cir cumstances is to deny the right o f g o v ernment, law and order, even o f dis ci pline ill the home. Tu deny the justice o f war would, moreover, mean not lib erty. blit license.- ' R e v . Knotts digressed in his address (o urge upon the women o f Cottage Grove the necessity o f heartier support m the local Red Cross work. » For his fin al climax be showed that ¡here was no place in America for the parasite, and anyone not willing to back up the government ought not to enjoy its privileges and proteetion. lie thought internment was too good for slacker*— they ought to be deported. He closed with a warm appeal that all nave a righteous patriotism inscribed upon their hearts.
