Cubs Dub Pleasant
Hill 51-37 Friday
Jefferson's Cubs dumped the
Pleasant Hill grade school five
Friday night in a 51-37 season
opener for both teams. Coach
Pupke's boys were an excited
crew during the first half and.
according to Pupke, missed many
close-in and rebound shots and
muffed up several fast bleak at
tempts. It w as a nip-and-tuck con
test, with a couple of quick buck
ets giving CG a 19-15 halftime
lead.
The second half was a different
story as the Cubs settled down
and built up a 39-19 bulge at the
end of the third frame. Pupke's
quintet, however. still looked a
little ragged, but were a 'teat
improvement over the lit st halt
In the fourth period, Jefferson's
second five came into the contest
and, like their predecessors, were
too excited to play good ball con
trol. In thia frame, Pleasant Hill
cut Grove’s lead to 45-35 before
the starting squad came back in
and built up the Imai 51-37 score.
In the preliminary game, Jef
ferson’s seventh graders dropped
a close 15-19 contest to Pleasant
Hill’s JV squad. Coach Divers’
boys were "nervous” and, accord
ing to the coach, had difficulty
in seeing their openings and were
hesitant in taking advantage of
several good shots.

Castle, Rice, Burleson Gather 49 Points; Hayes Sinks
Winning Basket in Last Minute; Miller Is Top Scorer
Despite Springfield Center Tom
Bourgeois' 16 point scoring spree
in the second quarter and total ol
32 points. Cottage Grove posted
a pulsating 64-62 win over the
Millers Friday nite on Grove's
home comt in the first district
contest for l»oth clubs.
Grove guard Leon Hayes, who
paced the JV squad to a 56-52
win over the minor Millers earlier
in the evening, came thru in usual
form as CG'c ace clutch hitler to
give the Lions their winning bas
ket and breaking the 62-62 dead-
kxk with 4.5 seconds remaining
in the game. Replacing Stewart
in the fourth frame. Hayes also
sunk the basket that put CG in
a 61-61 tie with the Millers and
then made a gift toss that gave
the Lions back the lead they had
lost earlier in the fourth period.
After a nip-and-tuck battle in
the early moments of the game
Cottage Grove put on a scoring
spurt, aided by donations from
Burleson, Castle. Ballew and Rice,
that gave them an 18-9 first period
edge.
It was this second quarter that
Springfield's Bourgeois cut loose
with a barrage of short hook shots
and added a couple of points from
the charity circle to rack up 16
of the 24 points the Millet s scored
in the quarter.
Grove got up to the 26 point
level and could do nothing right
while the Millers crept past the
Lions to the 31 point mark. All
CG could muster
until the dying seconds in the
half. when the Grovers put
on a
point scoring spurt to
wind up the first half on the
short end of a very close 33-32
contest.
The 31-27 lead was the largest
margin enjoyed by the visiting
Millers in the whole contest.
The third pci iod was Cottage
Grove's. The Lions scored five
quick points to nab a 37-33 lead
lief ore Bourgeois tied it up 37-37.
Castle then ended Bourgeois' pri
ority on hook shots with a couple
of his own, and Rice began to
hit from outside to give CG a
51-46 third quarter bulge.
Springfield, however, had a little
more to say about the contest as
the Millers plugged some holes in
their defense and rolled up 13
points in 3'2 minutes to give them
a 59-55 lead in the middle of the
final frame.
Cottage Grove quickly retaliated
and. while holding Springfield to
three points for the remainder ol
the game, scored nine more points
to sew up the contest.
Castle paced Cottage Grove
with 20 counters, followed by I’re
