Measure Will Avoid Special Budget Elections; To Save Taxpayers Money Mrs. Guy Cordon To Be Honored Friday, October 8 Ordinance No. 1469, drawn up “for the purpose of eliminating, so far as possible, the annual ex pense of special budget elections” and to increase the city's tax base was passed Monday night at the city council meeting. Cottage Grove mqst comply with the state statute which says that a city may increase the tax base six per cent each year without calling for a special budget elec tion. "The city of Cottage Grove is faced with working with an an tique tax base,” said Mayor Cre- peau. Thus, because the six per cent clause doesn’t allow for enough of an increase in the bud get to efficiently operate the city. Cottage Grove has to hold special budget elections each year, said Crepeau. The cost of these special budget elections, for w'hich the taxpayer has to ultimately pay. range from $600 to $2,500, depending on how many times they must lie called. According to Crepeau. as many as three special elections have been called. Ordinance 1469 calls for an in crease in the tax base from the present, out-dated $27,976.76 to $110,000 on which. Crepeau stated. Cottage Grove should lx* able to get along fine, with the six per cent clause taking care of the city’s increasing expenses from year to year. If the tax base were raised, these costly special elections would no longer lie necessary. As they are ultimately passed anyway, ac cording to the council, the citizens of Cottage Grove would save much money by passing on ordinance 1469. The Lane County Cordon for honoring committee C. C.
