Two drownings have occurred only a day apart, as against one last year during the 4th of July holiday period. It is a grim reminder of what can happen in unsupervised recreation and certainly is no help to the summer recreation program carried on for years, under the direction of Robert Dusenberry. W hile the lake has claimed the lives of several people, the lives which have been lost are not under a supervised swimming program. Nonetheless, those who have had a part in the summer recreation feel a definite responsibility in the matter, even though they are unable to control who can swim in the Cottage Grove lake and who can not. The responsi bility in most instances must rest with parents, who permit their young people to go to the lake unchaperoned or un supervised. As long as the lake is used, it may come to the piace where officials may have to prohibit unsupervised swimming. This remedy may be applied unless we are willing to spend money building swimming facilities in or near the city. There is no question, but that the series of accidents point to the need of building recreational facilities, which can be supervised as well as kept sanitary.
