TEACHER TROUBLES
In a Reader's Digest condensation from the school bulletin
as it appeared in the Pohland Oregonian, Miss Wilma Morrison,
school editor charges that teachers are selling their profession
short. The August Beader’s Digest article continues:
“Miss Morrison does not refer to complaints about wages,
but ■ to the “dismal, 1-have-given-the-best-years-of-my-life-
and-look-whgt-I-got-out-of-it moaning.’’ This “pervasive mias
ma,’’ she says, can be heard in clubs, street-car conversations,
teachers’ meetings and elsewhere, and is killing the enthusiasm
of young persons for teaching.
“Chief among complaints is that the public ignores the
teacher and regards him or her ax without status in the com
munity. Yet teachers should realize, Miss Morrison states, that
by having children entrusted to them they hold a “magic key”
to the hearts and homes of their neighborhood. Many parents,
interested in the teacher and eager to know him, are reluctant
to approach him “for'fear that he will think they are apple-
polisbing for Junior.”
“On the salary question. Miss Morrison holds that $200 u
month “looks like a nice fat sum to young people starting to
teach.” It is more than they could get in advertising, retail sales
or journalism, she points out. Moreover, jobs in sueh businesses
are by no means assured immediately after graduation.”
