—a ‘‘make-work” program which would
mean fewer improvements and higher
costs—for YOU!
Railroads uw modem diesel locomotives be
cause they are one of the means of giving
faster, better service to y> u.
Two men compose the crew of a diesel.
They occupy a clean, comfortable cab at the
front. The engineer handle» the throttle. 1 he
fireman sits nnd watches the track ahead.
With no coal to shovel, he haa practically
nothing else to do.
No Benefit To Yon
Now the lenders of the Brotherho«»d of I xko -
motive Engineers nnd the Brotherhood of
Ixicometive Firemen and Enginemen want
to une the diesel locomotive as a means of
forcing n feather-bedding scheme on the rail
roads The extra men they propose to add to
the dieset crews are not needed. There ia no
work for them.
The union lenders nre fighting nmong them
selves nbout which union should furnish
these extra, needless men. The Brotherhood of
Locomotive Engineers have even threatened
a strike. You may not bs interested in this dis
pute of these two unions, but you would lie
vitally concerned if these groups succeed in
putting through thia feather bedding scheme,
because it would mean a slowing up of the
improvement program of the railroads—of
which the diesel is th«! outstanding symbol.

freight cars, a» well ns on dmorl looomotivM,
and on the many other less conspicuous de
tails of railroading that contribute to Im
proved service.
We’d Like To Spend This Money On Yon
But brazen feather-bedding schema» like the
one now proposed would, if »uccemful, divert
l«rge sum« of money from our present im-

mnking the cost of their oja-ration prohibitive.
TheS»- demands are a gainst TOUR interests
—an well as those of th«- rnilroada. They are
schemes to "make work”. Neither you nor
the rnilroada should be forced to pay Mich •
p«<nalty for progress.
That's why the railroad» are reaiating these
"make work” demand* to the Inst ditch—and
why they am telling you about them.
You know how much the diesel has meant to
you in increased speed, comfort and conven
ience. The railroads have many more of them
on order for even greater improvement in
service to you. But needles» drains of money,
such ns thia present demand of the unions for
needless men on dieseto, reducs the ability of
the railroads to spend money on better serv
ice for you.
Proud as the railroads arc of the diesel, it is
only a small part of their improvement pro
gram. Since the War, literally billions of dol
