Radium Canetr Treatment
Traced to Accidental Burn
An accidental burn "years ago re-
• suited in a discovery which led to
the present day treatment of cancer
with radium.
Henri Becquerel, a French phys
icist, was experimenting with radi-
um when ft was still quite new.
Without thinking, he slipped a tube
of pure radium in his waistcoat pock
et and left it there for several hours.
Eight days later he found an in
flamed spot on his body at the point
above which the radium had rested.
Very excited, he rushed to the Cur
ies. who had discovered radium, and
informed them of this new develop
ment.
Pierre Curie, in order to make
, sure that it was actually the
radium which produced the irrita
tion, bandaged some radium bro
mide on his forearm where it re
mained for several hours. He, too.
received a severe burn, which did
not heal for six months. Convinced
by this demonstration. Curie sug
gested to H. A. Danlos. a derma
tologist at St. Louis hospital in Paris,
that radium might be of value in
treatment of malignant growths of
the skin. Danlos experimeiced. and I
reported his new findings in 1904. I
