We can find plenty to listen to right in our own troop« where sol diers of leaser rank have been the victims of some a’rogant offi cer. These complaints we are afraid will inc -ease as the sise of the army increases anil is one serious objecti< n to universal mili tary training. One fundamental objection to any sort of universal military training system is that in time will develop a caste system much like that of the Prussian army of Germany. Under a democracy the caste system is certainly ont of place. There should never be an inferior and superior feeling developed among the rank and file of our soldiers. West Point is responsible for a lot of the ill feeling which develops between the officers and non coms according to many observers, but so far as we know it has never turned out any gods or semi gods. We may have universal military training sooner or later but we want no Prussian caste system to spring up with it. LESSON OF SAFETY One lesson motorists learned during the war, stood them in Jood stead over the three day 4th of July holiday and this was riving with reasonable speed. The motoring public have not yet gone back to the break neck speed practiced prior to the war. From 1942 to 1946 we had to drive carefully to save tires and gas and should have learned that reasonable driving pays and to the credit of the motoring public this is still being practiced to « large degree. Up in the metropolitan area around Portland, highways rWre jammed with cars and so far as we know the holidays ftssed without a serious accident, a rather remarkable record. AS OLD AS OPPRESSION t It is often seriously argued that some form of communism J will eventually prevail throughout the world because it is a young and dynamic doctrine, filled with vitality and promise. । which satisfies the highest ambitions of phopies. Ou the other I hand, the argument continues, capitalist democracy Is old and exhausted, has outlived whatever value it may once have had. । and so is doomed to extinction in the long run. This has all been stated persuasively by the totalitarian propagandists, who have made a fine art of pamphleteering. Rut , it is a complete preversion of historical fact. There is nothing -basically new in communism, fascism, or any other totalitarian doctrine except the name. It is as old as cruelty and oppression. It deals with heretics, with the weapons of torture, execution and banishment—precisely as was done in the time of the in quisition centuries ago. Its labor policy is that of serfdom— every man and woman is regarded as a slave of the state, to be used as the official rnling class desires. Its eeduoroic philosophy ¡■«essentially that of absolute monarchy, when everything was the property of the king, and freedom of opportunity was un known. Its attitude toward all civil liberti e s*- f reeda m of press, of speech, of assembly— is likewise as old as recorded history flBrif. Everyone must think and parrot what they are told .or suffer grave consequences. Are the masses of the Russian people any better off under the Soviets than under the Romanoffs? One ruthless dictatorship succeeded another by force of arms. The peuple.*in whose name the revolution was effected, are still submerged in an abyss of ignorance, want, fear and absolute mental and physical regi- nfPntation Capitalist democracy, for all its faults, is the only form of government in which the people exert complete authority, and have the eternal safeguards that make dictatorship impossible. ; It was the goal toward which nations strived "through bloody centuries, and for which millions of men died. The dynamics of I the total state are in reality the dynamics of the crudest form ! of feudalism. nah Bieh ta Irea faH water fish and ahell fish are among the richest source» of iodine in the dietary, but the general use at iodised salt makes this of less si ibsh muiam hums ano seoese maa - SOOD 0» MAX HT UR TX AR»r »ALMON CANXRY M WKTSAN AMMCA ON TX sac« aménto avía , i--- F-------------------------------- V- X u.
