Lewis and the United Mine Workers (AFL). The court action came a few hours after the miners had started to stream back into the mines af ter an 18-day strike shutdown. Lewis, bowing to President Tru man, anounced Saturday that he was ordering the 4Q0.000 soft coal miners back to work pepding a review of the contempt conviction by the Supreme Court. The district court here imposed fines of $3,510.CMX> on the union and Lewis for going ahead with the strike in defiance of a court order. The union appealed the convic tions to the U. S. Court of Ap- peals. The government then asked the Supreme Court to take over the case directly. The high courts order Monday agreed to deviate from the normal legal channels and review it directly. The Supreme Court also set an early date Jan. 14— for argu ment on the case. This was under stood to have been agreed to by union and government attorneys. Unless the Supreme Court has unusual difficulty in making a de cision. this should assure a final verdict before the next coal strike deadline March 31.
