East- burn of Cottage Grove has com­ pleted his pre-flight course of 25 weeks here and will report to the Naval Air Station at Ottumwa. Iowa on August 10 for further training. Eastbum who resides at 937 Mon- roe Ave. Cadet Eastbum was a member of the St. Mary's Pre-Flight 4th Battalion which completed an ex­ cellent record by winning the Regimental "E ” emblematic of the overall championship of the cadet regiment in Military, Academic and Athletic training. Sgt. Pauley has served 19 months overseas as a munitions worker. His group, the 97th Bomb­ ardment group left the states on June 4, 1942, and sailed for Eng­ land where it flew the first day­ light Flying Fortress mission R ic h a r d A r le n , C h e r y l W a lk e r , against Europe on A u g u t 17th of the same year. Moving to North R o g e r P ry o r. Africa in support of the invasion ( it followed the 8th army through to the end of the Italian cam­ paign. While in Africa the 97th was the first heavy bomb group to bomb France, Sardinia and Germany. It also took part in the first bombing of the Italian Capi­ tal, Rome. With the invasion of “Identity Unknown DIANE Italy the group supported the 5th Army beach-head at Salerno and shortly afterwards moved its base to Foggia. Flying from this base the group participated in 271 strategic missions striking Germ- an industry, oil, and communica- tions. Another highlight of the group’s history was when they were the first to land an airplane in Russia on the initial Russian shuttle mission. Saginaw Fifteen ladies attended a fare­ well party and handkerchief shower for Mrs. R. W. Hill at the home of Mrs. Ruby Benston Wed­ nesday afternoon. Two contests were given with Leonora Johnston and Hazel Grimes winning first prizes and Noreen Sells and Hazel Grimes winning second prizes. The club also presented Mrs. Hill with a gift. Refreshments of jello, cake and coffee were served. Gilbert Clay has bought 40 acres from Jim Abbott on the west side of the highway and has started to build. Mr. and Mrs. Clay and baby are staying at the Abbott home w’hile they are building their bouse. Mr. and Mrs. Walt Sells and children spent a week recently with relatives in Idaho. Ruby Faye Willey of Roseburg spent the week end at the home of her aunt, Mrs. C. G. Keene. W. A. Keene spent several days with friends at Brooks.
