The only ones to take up the subject of dieting ate those who are suffering from some ailm ent, o r whose low'd ortes hate been told they have some serious dis ease. Those who have shopped around fo r d ifferent cures and who have failed to get results from medictrte’ pnd surgery, fin a l ly tu rn to dietetic treatm ent as a last resort. As one who has studi ed the minds of patients, I have found that the firs t thought that comes to them in this regard is tc find some specific article o f food which Is needed by the body te effect a cure. I am more and more convinced th a t this is not possible o f accom plishment in most cases, but that the secret lips in what may he caWM "hegtltive dieting." that is, learning to elim inate those a rti cles o f fóod which have been used regularly, anti which have in te r fered w ith health. Diaeaae is an unnatural condi tion which may be said to be sim ply “ impaired health.” Health w rite rs and dietitians are too inclined to lay emphasis upon such diseases as beri beri. pellagra, rickets, etc., pointing out th a t they are caused by an ab sence o f the normal m ineral salts in food, and tlia t this absence pro duces disease. W hile this is no doubt true in certain parts of the world, such as in India, it is not true that these diseases exist to any groat extent in ihe civilized countries of America or Europe. The fa ult in America is that 999 out of a l.OUi eat too much, and axe overnourished ra th e r than un dernourished. A ll of the common disorders, such as fevers, headaches, rheu matism, indigestion, etc., are not caused by one p a rticu la r food but by using.J»» much o f every kind of food, 4 he starch and sugar foods which contain an abundance" o f waste m aterial not ni- o e tsa TyTwr in the body. It is d iffic u lt to th in k o f a s in g ly ’’(Wmmdrf tlfcCBsP which is not caused, by over-eating, o r by- using foods -in w rong combination. O f course, it is true people often neglect to use food of the rig h t quality, hut you w ill usually find, if you study th e ir diet fo r a week, that they have used a sufficient amount of a ll of those natural elements necessary fo r the body. It is often the case that they do not get' Ihe good from the vita l foods that they do use because of a poor m ixture w ith so many other foods «which produce in d i gestion) ' “ ahd consequently the good foArflPeannof be assimilated by the body. In m y experience as a d ie titian , I have never fe lt the need in any one case of advising a patient to use more food as long as the Rxxl he was eating was of the rig ht quality. M y advice in-aim ost every disease is invariably to cut down on tlie food .supply to elim inate this-—or to out down on that kind o f ipetiy »nod IP the patients do this they are sure to get good re sults. jSjven fa '^uch diseases ay per- Films Developed and Printed Gk z W tz V an<l ® Exposures REPRINTS 3c EACH. Patients who are anemic can live fo r tw o o r three weeks on nothing but orange juice, and the quality of the bl.xxi w ill in crease steadily during that time. This is so simple because the body is free from its burden of too much food, apd can use the small amount o f v ita l nourishment in the orange and convert it into valuable blood cells, w hile the body has lost the power to do this when encumbered by too much food. A fte r you have trie d the m ilk cure, the b u tte rm ilk cure, the Salisbury diet, the raw food regime, etc., and these cures have failed to bring about the desired results, remember w hat I have said in this arric.e and tr y the “ fasting” cure in some form — learn to give up those foods which have been «interfering w ith your health. Don’t be as anxious to build up health as to remove the ohstiuctions whk-h have in te rfe r ed w ith health. Disease then dis appears as if by magic, and you w ill find yourself once again a radiant transform er o f universal energy. DR. II. A.
