Governor Lehman of New York, recently effected a reduc tion of 2.» per cent in that state’s income tax. And Governor Sprague of Oregon has announced that he will urge the legis lature to reduce the Oregon income tax by 2.’» percent. The people are entitled to the greatest possible tax re trenchment. Federal war taxation is the highest in history, and going much higher. It is up to states, towns, (.»unties. seho »1 districts and all taxing bodies, to pare their budgets to the ab solute limit. Surveys made o f local government indicate that there is a tremendous amount of over-lapping o f depart me.its. duplica tion of activity, etc. Experts are convinced that it is perfectly leasilde to reduce the cost of local government by hundreds of millions a year without eliminating any actually essential ser vice. Governors Lehman ami Sprague have taken a position that should he adopted by all public ottieials. The people cannot pay lor war. and pay for unnecessary governmental functions at the same time, either local or federal.
