A t the fro n t the Russians said that, w ith the help of w in try blasts sw irling snow drifts across the steppes, they had ju st about stopped the Gargantuan Nazi o f fensive against Moscow. They adm itted abandonment of Taganrog on the Sea of Azov, only about 35 miles west of Rostov which is the gateway to the rich oil fields o f the Caucasus. The Russians said, however, the inva ders paid w ith 35.(XX) dead and wounded in several days’ fig h tin g fo r Taganrog and Nazi e ffo rts to advance beyond the c ity had been reversed into defensive stands by Soviet counter attacks. Germany's "in te rn a l fro n t” also seethed and its main sector was located in hapless France where at least 150 Frenchmen faced early death before Nazi firin g squads in re trib u tio n fo r the as sassination o f tw o German o ffi cers. Aiready 50 had been put lo death at Nantes fo r the slaying of th«* German commandant there and another 50 were being pre pared to meet the same fate at m idnight tom orrow , unless the k ille rs are caught by th a t time. In Bordeaux the assassination of another German o ffice r promp ted the N azis-to round up an ad d itio n a l 100 hostages whtxse lives also hung by a thread. Aged M ar shal Petain, chief o f the vanquish ed French state, voiced his sorrow over the " riv e r o f blood” flow ing across France and hade a ll the Frenchmen in a radio broadcast to cease anti-Germ an attacks and help the Nazis catch terrorists, lest even bloodier punishment be visited upon the nation. W hile the underground w arfare against the Nazis continued in the west, an early w in te r bore down to hamper the Germans in Russia. Defense Foods Are Discussed at Chamber Meeting Chamber of Commerce m rm hrrs had o pportunity io learn some of the rudim ents of defense foods at the weekly luncheon Tuesday when Miss Jean Inglis, head of the high school home m aking de partm ent explained b rie fly about the vitam in content of the various foods. Dr. H. A. Hagen, president in introducing the speaker stated he was running the risk of being called pro-nazi in saying that the method adopted by H itle r in feed ing the German armies was the envy o f the w orld, since it had been proved th a t the German arm y could march fa rth e r and un dergo more hardships on the arm y diet than any arm y in the world. Miss Inglis, speaking on some o f the objectives o f the national n u tritio n conference, said the average fa m ily was often guided in food m atters by w hat one mem ber o f the fa m ily m ight like and usually this was too much meat, gravy and potatoes. H er job, she said, was to teach fu tu re home makers how to prepare the rig h t kind of food in an a ttra ctive man ner, to insure proper physical well-being and to lessen diseases caused by a lack of vitam ins. Preceding the ta lk o f Miss Inglis members of the senior class presented a short program in be h a lf o f the senior king and queen, followed by the sale of tickets to the carnival.
