October 4th at 8:00 o'clock When Miss Phyllis E. Johnston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Johnston of Portland, became the bride of Glenn C. Welden. son of Mr. and Mrs. Morton V. Welden of Cottage Grove. The Rev. Albert Kuhs read the Venice in e pres ence of 100 guests and an unusual coloring was lent the a ffa ir as the groom, his best man and the two ushers were all in U. S. army uni forms. The church was beautiully dec orated in asters and dahlias w ith a greenery arrangement of palms find ferns. Two sisters of the bride, Lois Fitzgerald and Lor raine Kivi, sang as a duet. " I Love You T ruly.” and Mrs. Fitzgerald sang. “ A t Dawning," accompani ed by her sister-in-law. Mrs. S. Fitzgerald, who also played the je d d in g music. •• The bride was attired in a com bination of white lace and net over Whitejsatin and her fingertip veil fell from a coronet of seed pearls. She carried a bouquet of white chrysanthemums. Her ma tron of honor. Virginia Clay, wore turquoise and her bridesmaids, Margaret Howard and Elaine Erickson, wore peach and blue. The best man was Rob B ritton and the ushers were Chester Fer guson and Glen Lecklider. The little ring bearer was the bride's nephew, Richard Kivi. V The bride is a graduate of the ¡High School of Commerce and is employed in a clerical position. The groom is a member of the 29th Engineers, stationed fo r the present! in Portland. Taylor Street bi Portland. LEAGUE MEETS. — The Eugene chapter of the Lane County Hard of Hearing league fact last Thursday at the home of the president. Mrs. G. R. Hyslop, at Eugene. The membership is divided into two parts and each part is conducting a membership mpaign. the losing side to en- rtain the winning side on No vember 29th. A ll local hard of hearing persons are eligible and welcome to join the league. Miss Belle Burkholder, local member, tended the meeting. She w ill en- rta in the group at her home f<J their firs t meeting in November. A potluck luncheon w ill be served and all hard of hearing persons in this community are invited to come and bring a covered dish or sandwiches. Coffee, cream and a covered dish w ill be served by the hostess. K { LADIES GOLF. Eight ladies were present for the usual golf play Wednesday. M rs. Ella Zimmerly won the prize ball fo r low number o f putts, 17 for 9 holes. The first Wednesday of each month is reserved for pot luck luncheons at the club house or at a local restaurant. The us ual play is each Wednesday at 1:00 p. m. A t golf play yesterday, Mrs. Blla Zimmerly and Mrs. Merle King tied w ith a score of 48. In the shingle tournament a shingle was to be placed at the point where the handicap and plus par was reached but both Mrs. King and Mrs. Zimmerly played the en tire course without having to place shingles. The Degree of Honor lodge held their social meeting Tuesday eve ning in Eagles hall. At the busi ness session Edith Bradshaw. Frances Schilling and Betty Bush nell were accepted fo r initiation. Plans were further discussed for the convention to be held here on November 24th and committees were appointed as follows: Mi's. Carl King, chairman of a commit tee to be in charge of the lunch eon arrangements; Mrs. Frances Swanson, chairman of the serving committee; Mrs Vera Ziebeck. chairman of hall decorating com mittee; Marie Lemmer. chairman of welcoming committee; Ethel Hammond and Helen Cochran, courtesy committee. Mrs. Gene vieve Nelson was appointed to ar range fo r reserving the banquet room of the Rainbow cafe for the banquet to be held in the evening. A t the next meeting, practice w ill be held for the convention at which time the initiatory degree w ill be conferred upon the three candidates. A t the close of busi ness, refreshments of pumpkin pie w ith whipped cream and cof fee were served by Mrs. Richard Bushell and Miss Rodney Hood. Table decorations were of the Hal lowe’en m otif. Two tables of bridge followed w ith Mrs. Carl King winning the prize for high score and Mrs. Vera Ziebeck for low. PR ESBY TER IA N AID. The Presbyterian Aid met last week and held their experience social. Mrs. Mabel Helliwell, presi dent, presided. Plans were discuss ed for raising money and making improvements to the church. The Aid was divided into two groups for the experience social and Mrs. George Jacobsen was captain of one group assisted by Mrs. J. P. Graham. Mrs. L. J. McCoy was captain of the other group assist ed by Mrs. Nellie Blackmore. Mrs. Jacobsen's group won the contest w ith $95.88 and Mrs. McCoy's group received $60.61. The devo tions consisted of each member reading a passage of scripture. Plans were made to hold a cover ed dish luncheon at the next meet ing in November. The losing group w ill be the hostess committee. Re freshments were served by the hostess committee w ith Mrs. C. A. Beidler as chairman. The Women's Bible class met yesterday at the home of Mrs. May Hogate w ith Mrs. Ida Swann as assistant hostess. A potluck luncheon was served at the noon hour. Sixteen members were pres ent and one guest, Mrs. Lila Veatch. Devottonals were led by Mrs. Swann and a short business meeting followed. Three dollars was allowed by the class to t>e used in paying for the electric fan being placed in the furnace. Twen ty-three calls were reported and fourteen bouquets given.
