Work Is Started Clearing Basin of DorenaReservoir Thirty Men to Be Employed at Beginning of Work WORK IS SPEEDSD AT THE GROVE DAM Work of clearing the Dorena dam basin has been startl'd Chas. C. Phillips, senior engineer of the Eugene area office, U. S. Engin eers, told a Sentinel representa tive this morning. T hirty men will be employed In clearing the basin, which consists of approximately 1,000 acres. Mr. Phillips said the preliminary work on the dam would be prosecuted as long as funds were available for the work, but expressed some doubt as to the possibility of the allocation of the entire amount necessary to complete the dam at this parti cular time due to the war situa tion. Work of relocating the O. P. & E. railroad and the highway will probably be started by July 1st, he said. Clearing work will not be as heavy as on the Cottage Grove dam as the major portion of the basin is open. R. H. Kipp of Salem, executive secretary of the Willamette basin commission is expected to attend the flood control hearing in Wash ington May 1st. Work Speeded on Grove Dans. Construction work on the Cot tage Grove project continued at an accelerated pace during the fav orable weather of the past few weeks. The ConnoMey Co. has resumed work on the earth section of the dam and is making steady progress on this work which will be great ly expanded as the weather per mits. Excavation lor the east abut ment of the concrete spillway sec tion has been underway the past ten days with good progress be ing made. There has been little activity in the pouring of concrete while the contractor has revised and greatly increased the capacity of his concrete mixing and plac ing equipment the last ten days. The steel bridge across the Coast Fork just below the dam has been completed and completion of the approaches is expected at an early date. The E. C. Hall Co. of Eugene has made rapid progress on the clearing of the right-of-way for the relocation of the county road around the west side of the pro posed reservoir pool. I t is expect ed that with continued good weather the work on this project will be expanded and rapid strides made toward its completion. 4 Boys to Attend Junior Olympics us Guests of Legion Monday evening the American Legion agreed to sponsor the en try of four local boys to the Jun ior Olympics to be held in Eugene April 25 and 26. So far as known at press time the selections had not been made. The Junior Olymp ic event will be under the auspices of the Legion. The membership also voted to participate with the Auxiliary in presenting the annual award to the outstanding junior high school boy and girl graduate. The award has been made an annual affair for several years and will be given the two students again this year. BRISBANE TRUCK OVERTURNED. The truck of the Brisbane Elec tric was overturned on the new highway near the Golden Rule Auto Service last Thursday near noon in a collision with the car driven by Leland Ray. The col lision occurred Just as the Ray car came out of the Golden Rule Auto Service and struck the Brisbane truck, traveling south.
